The Board of Governors decided, unilaterally, that no published textbook in the field of sociology could be used in compliance with the law for an Intro to Sociology class. None. Victor: There's not a single existing textbook on the market that could be used that would qualify under state law? Zachary: Correct. Victor: I'm sorry, that's kind of funny. Like, the absurdity of not a single sociology textbook getting past the censors. I mean, it makes me kind of proud of our colleagues, but...
I do want to shout-out my fellow sociologists, who have collectively created a discipline so woke that not a single one of our introductory textbooks can make it past Florida's censors.
Great work everyone.
Thanks for this hot tip! I've sent off an email to my MP.

CBS didn't run the 60 Minutes segment on CECOT, but over here at @propublica.org we've been working on the story since March, including finding out who each and every man sent to that maximum security prison was.

No-strings-attached, zero-means-testing, no-questions-asked cash payouts have been proven, over and over again, to be the most effective form of charity/aid going.
It gets people in housing, and it saves the state money. We know this. It's fact, not theory.

The Immigration Department has banned only one member of the controversial Irish hip-hop trio Kneecap from entering Canada, it told CBC News in a statement, contradicting a Liberal MP's claim in September that none of them would be let in. It’s the first time Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has publicly commented on the cases of the three men since Vince Gasparro, parliamentary secretary for combatting crime, published a social media video two months ago saying “effective immediately, the members of Kneecap have been deemed ineligible from entering Canada.” Gasparro accused the band of support for organizations on Canada’s terror list, Hezbollah and Hamas.
Canadian parliamentary secretary for combating crime Vince Gasparro LIED when he said all of Kneecap was banned from Canada, per CBC.
Only one member was prohibited.
This is an incredible overreach of power and violation of public trust and the rights of these men. He must be held to account.
This. Especially because I believe that writing is thinking (for me). I don’t want to lose that.
Teen Vogue took young people seriously. It's impossible to overstate how important, how rare, and how profoundly needed that is.

The caption is "Young, mostly liberal law students in this study navigated the ethical conflicts of their career paths through a series of moral justifications." The article below is titled "Good Lawyer, Bad Lawyer," and it is written by Elena G. Van Stee.

What a lovely message from @bookshop.org. Glad to see them growing and growing. We CAN claim back what has been taken from us by these monstrous corporations, and it starts with things like this. Grab some books these next couple days!
In his final interview, which was about public sociology, Michael Burawoy said that students “are our primary public as academics.”
I appreciate his point cuz critiques about academics being cut off from the public and only in conversation with other academics ignore the crucial work of teaching.

I am begging Canadians to understand that Canada Post, like public transit, should not be a business - it's a service.
Canada Post is a lifeline for rural, remote and Northern communities and overall, we need to re-evaluate why people think they "need" random shit delivered ASAP.
Nothing is inevitable. In either direction. Hope and work.

Anti-science creeps northward. 😳 Dr. Boileau's comments suggest ignorance of asymptomatic spread, the exponential harm of each infection (including long COVID risk), and the effectiveness of layered protections (vaccines, masking in public, cleaning the air):

Hey Canada, how do you feel about spending taxpayer dollars to cover the cost of a lawsuit because our government decided to defame righteous critics of genocide? Is that fiscally prudent governance?

If you’re canceling subscription services with giant companies with ties to terrible people, you should think about replacing them with a library card. Many library systems give you access to physical media (some of which you can’t find on streaming!) as well as other great stuff.
