Wondering how many people who enjoyed Top Gun: Maverick recognized it as anti-Iran propaganda...

Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)
Watched by Branson Reese 28 Apr 2022

Abrams isn't a man so much as he's an avatar of cultural entropy. If you make something popular enough eventually you will die or sell it off and and a person in thick rimmed glasses whose main artistic vision is that he loves to have meetings will take it and sandblast it until it's nothing. I hate to see this happen here but maybe it's good that this happened. Maybe every franchise should collapse into a version of itself that makes shareholders nod and shake each others' hands. We should learn to speak in a language that rich people who don't dream can't comprehend.

yes, Dems are 100% ok with it. if they werenโ€™t, they wouldnโ€™t have voted for it dozens of times or tried to hit Republicans from the right for not being โ€œserious about the borderโ€ during the 2024 election or be totally abdicate fighting against it now. but they did all that, theyโ€™re social fascists

Palestine Solidarity in the Age of Reaction - Steve Salaita Should people involved with the Palestine solidarity movement in North America, traditionally leftist in orientation, seek alliances with the political right?

Here's a long essay analyzing the recent emergence of rightwing critics of Israel. I argue that it is a bad idea for the Palestine solidarity movement in North America to seek any kind of alliance with those critics or to validate the ideologies they represent.

Epitaph on a Tyrant
W. H. Auden
1907 โ€“ 1973

Perfection, of a kind, was what he was after,
And the poetry he invented was easy to understand;
He knew human folly like the back of his hand,
And was greatly interested in armies and fleets;
When he laughed, respectable senators burst with laughter,
And when he cried the little children died in the streets.

The woman killed by ICE today was a poet. She won the 2020 Academy of American Poets, University & College Poetry Prize at Old Dominion University.

(And this is Renee from confirmed socials- a photo of a different woman with red lipstick is going around, but that was a classmate.)

A USPS mailbox in New York City

A USPS mailbox in New York City

USPS quietly changed its postmark rules โ€” mail is no longer dated when you drop it off. The โ€œofficialโ€ date is when it hits automated sorting โ€” sometimes days later

Which could have major implications for mail in voting โ€” itโ€™s a clever way to disenfranchise voters thatโ€™s going largely overlooked

The thing that gets me about this is that even if we wanted to make a positive AI ad, they never showcase AI being used to enhance someoneโ€™s day or improve their workflow. Thereโ€™s no โ€œit allows me to more easily do what I love.โ€ Itโ€™s always presented as a failsafe for the dispassionate and incurious

you gotta remember that from a conservative perspective, these programs are a failure. they don't want to reduce homelessness, they want to punish homeless people. they'd pay 10x as much for that happily

Dusk

On the pondโ€™s troubled, murky face,
gathered lotus leaves tremble,
As the lotus leaves are coy,
they hardly make a sound above a whisper.

When they make a sound my heart trembles,
my eyes trace the dim horizon...
the dark, dark mountains merely loom.
 โ€” Once lost, things never return.

Nothing could be as sad as this;
the grass rootsโ€™ smell wafts gently to my nostrils,
the fieldโ€™s earth and stones together looking at me.

 โ€” In the end, Iโ€™m not willing to plough!
Standing absent-minded in the dusk;
somehow, when Fatherโ€™s image sticks in my mind, I only
   advance a step or two.

by Chลซya Nakahara

The Bat

By Ellen Bryant Voigt
Reading in bed, full of sentiment
for the mild evening and the children
asleep in adjacent rooms, hearing them
cry out now and then the brief reports
of sufficient imagination, and listening
at the same time compassionately
to the scrabble of claws, the fast treble
in the chimneyโ€”
                      then it was out,
not a trapped bird
beating at the seams of the ceiling,
but a bat lifting toward us, falling away.

Dominion over every living thing,
large brain, a choice of weaponsโ€”
Shuddering, in the lit hall
we swung repeatedly against
its rising secular face
until it fell; then
shoveled it into the yard for the cat
who shuttles easily between two worlds.
