Ok I can understand weight and bulkiness, so I would prefer f4.0. Unless f2.8 is important for you. 😉
As far as I can see, the price difference between the 2.8L and 4.0L is around €580.00 here in Germany. The question is: Do you need an L-series lens? Or would, for example, a Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM for around €580.00 be sufficient for your purposes?
A 28-300 might be more versatile and makes sense for me if I only want to carry one lens. Especially if I have to buy it.
I have two questions: 1. Does it have to be f2.8... or would f4.0 be sufficient? Even with that, you can still isolate most subjects well. 2. Why a prime lens? Zooms are so good these days that a prime lens isn't necessary, IMO. I use a 70-300 for special landscape shots because that's what I have.
