Tree of the day is this Japanese maple tree (April and October)
An excuse to post the Shakespeare joke I found actually funny...
GLENDOWER:
I can call spirits from the vasty deep.
HOTSPUR:
Why, so can I, or so can any man;
But will they come when you do call for them?

This is such a nice song: a favourite from this year

Autumn begins โ I thought by now this journey Would have ended
I had this little poem in my head all day
By Kobayashi Issa (HT @bashosociety.bsky.social for sharing)
Thanks - I can see the resemblence, but the leaves appear to be v different to stewartia monodelpha. I think its an ornamental cherry of some kind!
I stand by the decision. Looked too good to walk by!
Ha - yes, a poor substitue for the teasle, though mine is sadly on its way out already...
I love it. Such a moving song about accepting loss and change
Mournes today
I did not - just looked it up though! The spiky head was used to lift fibers on wool fabric to make it softer, called teaseling
I love that this plant is someone's favorite. Native over there. Of course it's invasive over here. And personally it's way too "spikey" for my liking. ๐
This teasel plant self-seeded in my garden and is now my favouite. Its about 6ft, with lots of little pools of water where the leaves meet up the stems, making it v popular with insects too
I do like this beech, to the extent I framed a previous photo I took of it!
Tree of the day
We might need to consider the effect of the Earthโs long-term axial tilt cycle here alsoโฆ
My tree of the day - yew
Very good! I looked up the pub on streetview, and thatโs a very impressive one growing on the wall! And the pub has been in business since the 1600s ๐ฎ
Exactly what I thought!
Mr Wisteria is, understandably, tree of the day
Wild garlic update
Great article on the gap between how we value human and natural heritage. Interesting that in Portugal and Italy, anyone is able to recommend a tree for protection www.bloomberg.com/opinion/arti...
I really enjoyed Mikey 17. Hope it does well as it was such an original and fun sci fi & political satire, with great cast and performances. My one issue is how very naรฏve folks in sci fi stories are about the fact that death-followed-by-cloning still equals death. See also: teleporters in Star Trek
Not this time. I hope to get to Breen wood again soon :-)
My #thicktrunktuesday nomination โ yew tree at St. Andrew's Church, Totteridge. Perhaps the oldest living thing in London.
Itโs so nice!
My tree of the day is this holm oak in Armagh
You sure can! This particular tree is known for potentially being a living witness to the signing of the Magna Carta. I seen a carving of it that was done in the 1840s or around then, and it hasnโt changed much since. But I guess 1840s was only a short time ago relative to the age of it!
