There are lots of opportunities to build on decades of social science theory, especially theories that will help enable transformative change.
But these theories were dominated by just a few theories that try to explain individual, short-term actions. We present a map to help scientists adopt a broader set of human action theories.
We examined all papers published in 2023 in leading conservation journals and found that about 1/3 were social science, and about 1/3 of social papers on human action used human action theories.
