It's interesting watching Trump in real time realize the war he started with Iran isn't going to have a simple resolution he can bully his way into. I honestly think he thought he could start a war with Iran and it would be over before lunch.
Just wait until he finds out how expensive wars are.
The simplest example is how North Korea is neither a 'democratic people's republic' nor 'communist'. Though it calls itself a democracy and its enemies call it communist, it operates like an absolute monarchy under the divine right of the Kim family.
(Me wishing #auspol media was less credulous)
Discourse takes too much at face value when it comes to politics. Understanding what political terms mean and also how a place actually operates is nuanced. The IRCG is the real power in Iran, it's more a military dictatorship that uses religion. Iran was never going down by decapitating it.
I don't know. Religious nationalism is not the same as having a religion, but many religions demand an abdication of critical thinking to accept faith and authority. Which is obviously being used by bad actors atm. I'm also furious at their rolling back on women's and queer rights globally.

Mark Carney at The Lowy Institute in Australia.
He speaks to The Middle East and the ruptured international rules based order.
The attack by Israel and US was without speaking to the UN nor allies, like Canada and Australia
A clear message indeed

I don't hate this war because it wasn't "authorized properly," or because I am not a fan of the specific President waging it. I hate this war because it is a war.

You know, the story goes that The Art of War is full of obvious common sense advice because Sun Tzu wrote it for neppo baby generals making foolish or reckless mistakes that would lead to unnecessary deaths.
The more things change...
So, in launching a huge bombing campaign on Iran they apparently didn't plan for:
- Who takes over;
- Interceptor shortages from sustained drone retaliation;
- How to defend US bases in the region;
- Threats to ships in the Strait of Hormuz; and
- How to evacuate Americans with airspace closed.
That's also part of it, I think. Generally destabilizing the region to ferment internal strife and make things easier for Israeli and US interests. There's also those that either believe or say they believe they're fighting a holy war because they think it'll play well with their base. So medieval.
I'm so sick of fundamentalists. As someone who doesn't have a religion, belief in a sky daddy is as fantastical to me as belief in unicorns. The idea that these people use a fantasy as an excuse to hurt very real people and destroy their very real lives is unfathomable to me.
I wonder if a hard-line successor will assume power and further destabilize the region just like every other time this has happened
Unquestioningly thinking this will lead to freedom for Iranians is grasping at magic beans.
It may lead there, more likely it will lead down a more brutal path. As it did the last time the USA interfered... Typically, governments that use brute force do not have the well-being of civilians in mind.
Black and white photo of Marjane Satrapi with the quote: "The world is not divided between East and West. You are American. I am Iranian, we don't know each other, but we talk and we understand each other perfectly. The difference between you and your government is much bigger than the difference between you and me. And the difference between me and my government is much bigger than the difference between me and you. And our governments are very much the same."
Once again.
And as always it is innocent civilians who suffer the most when they should never need to suffer at all.
It isn't a distraction. Fascism needs war to justify itself and sustain a narrative, which is why it's an inevitable outcome of ultra nationalist far right governments. Iran, especially, has been a fixation for the USA for years.
This isβ beyond heartbreaking. The consequences will be far reaching.
Australian Labor has a huge mandate to effect change. Use it. Negative gearing limited. Capital gains tax discount gone.

On a fundamental level, I do not understand them.
Good morning.
If you've just woken up, the politics of hope just crushed the politics of fear and hatred (Labour-Reform).
It wasn't even close.
40.6% for the Greens. Reform second on 28.7%, Labour third on 25.4%.
Stop being led by the nose with your own prejudices and start solving the problems realistically. Australia has always been multicultural and the better for it. Accept it.
After WW1 and WW2, under the White Aus Policy, many migrants came from all across Europe and we treated them like suspect second class citizens too, despite being 'white', despite helping build modern Australia. This whole premise is bullshit scapegoating.
Before the gold rush the colonial pop barely reached 400k. The White Australia Policy exists because we were not a white Aus. Fear of Chinese migrants was used to build the policy. Migrants that were lured and trapped in Aus btw, the Aus Chinese diaspora remains the biggest outside China.
What right does Tony Abbott have to think about Australia as the 'anglosphere'? Jezus he's such a racist. No wonder John Howard is his favorite. We are one of the most multicultural countries on earth. We are situated in the Asian and Pacific region. #auspol
Advance Australia purports to be 'grassroots' but the pro-fossil pro-Israel lobby group is actually funded by millionaires & billionaires such as Packer, Rinehart, Liebler. @sstephanietrann.bsky.social investigates.

BREAKING
Charles Kushner, the US Ambassador to France, has been banned from meeting with members of the French government after he failed to show up to a diplomatic summons with the French Foreign Minister.
A California agency received 20k AI-generated comments opposing heat pump rules. Staff called a sample to verifyβseveral said they never sent comments. Raises serious questions about the opposition campaign that helped kill the clean air standards, that would've prevented 1000s of premature deaths.
We can get to the other side of this. My biggest hope is that universal human rights hold.
At least fascism is inept. A cudgel that can't long-term think effectively and has no true understanding of people or state responsibility. Ultimately "I do what I want, fuck the out group" is not sustainable. Reminds me of the Libertarian town that kept feeding bears cause they 'do what they want'.
