This is superb.
Did he achieve lift-off?
However, in the absence of a damson, frozen or otherwise...
I got a one star "fit only for the bin" because my historical romance novel - The Admiral's Daughter - was not an in-depth study of the Georgian navy. Which if course, the reader should have expected from M&B, that well-known military history publisher.
It was the great Richard Richardson, fabulous bird artist and illustrator of one of the first "modern" pocket field guides
I was at a bird reserve in Norfolk with a very good birder & a couple got very excited about a flock of homing pigeons. 'What are they?' 'Ptarmigan,' Richard replied, straight-faced. Silence. Then isn't it a bit early for those?' they asked. Ever since, homing pigeons have been ptarmigan
I got as far as your first line & though - 30K. Happens to all of us, I suspect
Authors outside Meta
As has been noticed by others, the irony of Meta happily stealing millions of authorsβ words but refusing to open the door to have a letter delivered - will Lisa Nandy or Chris Bryant stand up for British artists or turn their eyes and kiss a corporate ring
Protest sign reading "Piracy is so Meta" with Meta written as the company logo
Protest sign reading "I'd write a better sign but you'd just steal it"
Got my double sided placard ready for the @societyofauthors.bsky.social demo against #MetaBookThieves. Today, 1.30, Granary Square, King's Cross!
Fab turnout at the #MetaBookThieves demo. Everyone comparing notes. "How many of yours did they steal?" Winner so far is Jenny Haddon, 55.
Author holding sign that reads "Placard for help pen people (AI wrote this message"
Excellent sign at the #MetaBookThieves demo

META BOOK THIEVES - They Must Do The Write Thing The Society of Authors are protesting Metaβs HQ today This image shows illustrations of authors holding placards saying βmake it fairβ and βdo the write thingβ
Today UK authors are protesting against Meta for stealing our work to train their AI model. Authors earn an average of Β£7000 per year, we are not rich, and yet a trillion dollar company decided it didnβt want to license our work fairly as it was βtoo expensiveβ
Theft is not a valid alternative.
A graphic on an aqua background with an illustration of people prorating with signs. The text reads: THE SOCIETY OF AUTHORS STOP THIEF! Meta must #DoTheWriteThing "BOOKTHIEVES MAKE IT FAIR DO THE WRITE THING COMPENSATION FOR CREATORS
Today I will be joining the Society of Authors in demanding that Meta makes recompense for stealing my work and that of millions of others to train its AI software.
You can afford this. We canβt. What you did was illegal. Fess up, and pay up.
They've got 200+ of mine in various languages... #metabookthieves
A hand-painted placard saying Get The Zuck Off Our Books
Some great railway staff asked about my placard and wished us luck! #DoTheWriteThing @societyofauthors.bsky.social
The existing copyright law is fine as it is. The suggested 'opt out' puts the onus on the small producers to tell the thieves not to steal their stuff - that's not a fair burden.
If the AI companies feel it's 'too expensive' to follow the law as is, that's a problem with their business model.
Regency wedding couple on the cover of Becoming the Earl's Convenient Wife
Becoming the Earl's Convenient Wife is just 99p in the UK on Amazon for April! A friends to marriage story with a twist #bargain #pricedrop #Regencyromance
I've yet to have anyone explain coherently why forcing artists to "opt out" of their work being stolen is ok and workable, or indeed any different than me stealing my neighbour's car because they didn't opt out from their car being stolen.
