What a character looks like doesn't matter - they need to be someone that any star can play. When smart ads comic lead Bruce Willis dropped out of a movie they cast Whoopi Goldberg.
It's the *character* of the character that matters. How they behave and why. How they process information and why.
These are Saint movies from the 30s and 40s. That character has been around for a while!
Just like now, Hollywood was interested in franchises - can we make a dozen movies with this character?
The Roger Moore show was to cash in on Bond.
