I am a liberal because I believe in the ontological force of the principles, not because I am a member of a team.
My moral and political commitments are to human rights and democratic consentβequally with those who vote like me and those who vote differently.
The identity system does.
The liberal identity marker is sociological, not philosophical. And in moments of crisisβespecially geopolitical crises that force the underlying principles into viewβit becomes clear that identity logic often overrides principle logic.
Liberalism as an identity system operates differently. It signals belonging, encodes cultural alignment, organizes coalitions. None of that is inherently problematic. But identity logic necessarily distinguishes βusβ from βthem.β
The universal principle does not require that distinction.
Liberalism as a universal principle rests on clear claims: human rights precede the state; political legitimacy derives from the express consent of the governed; sovereignty derives from the people themselves.
If those claims are universal, they do not stop at US borders.
Watching US politics as an American with progressive values living in Taiwan, one gains a daily thought experiment on what liberalism means as a universal principle versus liberalism as an identity system.
These are related fields. In practice, they are not the same thing.
