Getting along like Unicode in an ASCII file. In a love/hate (but mostly love) relationship with Alabama, Mobile in particular. I like SQL. And, of course, EVERYTHING I post here is on my own behalf, speaking only for myself, etc. unless explicitly stated

Uploading Pirated Books via BitTorrent Qualifies as Fair Use, Meta Argues * TorrentFreak In an ongoing lawsuit, Meta now argues that uploading pirated books to strangers via BitTorrent qualifies as fair use.

In 2013 Aaron Swartz committed suicide for facing 35 years in prison for mass downloading scientific articles.

13 years later, Meta is almost getting away with an infraction orders of magnitude larger.

The law didn't change.

I’ve seen a few in the Mobile Bay area driven by a woman, but it’s definitely not many.

Can y’all please hurry up with the world domination though? The men, we’re NOT DOING WELL AT IT.

… I should really clean up my desk. The piles of papers, old magazines, unopened junk mail that I really meant to recycle but never got to, etc. are probably going to start undergoing geological processes soon.

It amazes me that there people out there that let Claude commit changes without review. There are only two HUMANS at my work that are allowed to do that.

Yep. It’d be really NICE if something of us survived death, but it’s unprovable. I definitely still enjoy the dreams because it’s spending time with the person in a way.

I dreamed of my dad last night, and I feel like it's finally been long enough since he died that dreaming of dad no longer consistently hits the 'pain' button. It was a good dream, and I woke up happy to have seen him. I wish it had been real, of course, but it was still good.

In the wise words of Hetson and Morris, we just get by however we can. We all gotta duck when the shit hits the fan.

I appreciate your thoughts here - we're trying to navigate these exact waters at my employer. We've got a lot of folks that are REALLY into AI, but they're not mindful of the longer-term consequences of thoughtless adoption. I am particularly worried about the future lack of skilled senior devs.

The quote in question is, "The nation that will insist upon drawing a broad line of demarcation between the fighting man and the thinking man is liable to find its fighting done by fools and its thinking by cowards." It's distressingly applicable today.

Thank you to @nevillemorley.eurosky.social for correcting me - the quote is misattributed to Thucydides, but it's from Sir William F. Butler's 1889 bio of Maj. Gen. Charles George Gordon.

Leaving the original post up for the thread, but wanted to ensure I made a correction now that I'm home.

Oh, by 'here' I meant, 'the United States.' Definitely haven't seen it as much on Bluesky, and I quit Twitter long ago, but I am not at all surprised it runs rampant there.

I can't fucking believe we're doing this again.

I am somehow unsurprised that the misattribution got major traction here…

Heh, young. Almost 50 now. 😊

I should also say - I am absolutely not trying to dispute what you say! You’re very much the expert. Just the online version of making conversation, dropping anecdotes.

28.02.2026 15:42 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

Early 90s would be the right time for me to be in high school, so that’s consistent.

28.02.2026 15:39 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

I appreciate the correction! To be fair, the misattribution predates the internet, if memory serves. I seem to recall hearing it in high school, when to me β€˜the internet’ was a half-hour on Compuserve.

I must admit almost total ignorance of the works of Mr. Terkel (I am aware he existed, at least) so I can't say that he DIDN'T write on the matter any more than I can say that he did.

I'd trot out the Thucydides quote, but it's quite clear that the administration doesn't want ANYONE doing any thinking.
