So few stories, when they spoke of knighthood at all, discussed the vigil.

Several friends of mine recommend Ultima, which I think was the newest hotness for a while? If I was ever going to run a FFXIV campaign it'd probably be that or Stars/Worlds without Number
It's a design philosophy difference, most likely. If you play Japanese TTRPGs (the best example I have on hand is Double Cross, but it's old) it's trying to appeal to busy businessmen who want to roleplay being an anime.
If they sold it as the FFXIV board game, I think that'd be more accurate.
100%. The book reintroduces the city states of the game and literally uses the maps, 1 to 1, from the game.
It encourages you to use raid markers and has the monsters moves "pre-programmed" for the GM.
There are some good ideas, but you have to dig around with a diamond tipped industrial drill.

One of my greatest regrets about the Final Fantasy XIV TTRPG was that it could not wear its disdain for the players harder on it's sleeves.
"Oh, your character is a Paladin? You've got 35 Virve. Don't ask me what Virve is and you can't change the amount. All paladins have that much virve."

So we can't get to the 1.0 maps and the Calamity happened, but I do imagine Elish's home is this region on the path from the Coerthas Central Lowlands towards Lake Silvertear.
The influx of people in that area was seen as a boon for the trade caravans that might move through that region.
