🌽 On #Indiana Food Day, students husked farm-fresh local corn & enjoyed it for lunch!

“I think it’s important that the school gives [students] an idea of #agriculture & farm grown food.

“I’ve learned how much our schools have gotten food from farmers & how much it helps out the school." [1/2]

American families are living in crisis -- the absence of SNAP means many no longer have the means to feed their children the nutritious meals they need to thrive.

You have so much power to make a difference.

As a furloughed fed, I haven't received a full paycheck since Sept. Our tightened family budget is now razor thin, there's nowhere else we can cut.

In an effort to feel like I'm still part of something worthwhile, I've been volunteering at our local food pantry these days.

It's a labor of love.

The care they took, and the lessons learned, will go one step further in helping create more sustainable, local #foodsystems for generations to come.

Spent the morning volunteering and teaching local students how to butcher and process farm-raised chickens.

It was a total blast running into the Institute for Agriculture & Trade Policy @iatp.bsky.social at #FarmAid in Minneapolis!

Hanging out with a fiery skipper -- an under-rated native butterfly!! -- while gardening this freaking gorgeous afternoon.

The goal is for ~80% of the schools' farms' produce to be used in the kitchens at River Valley, so students can enjoy the fruit of their labor in their #schoolmeals!

James A. Garfield school has been working hard on these gardens, and they were awarded the Indiana Department of Education #STEM Certification this past year because of their efforts. [2/3]

Prior Lake-Savage Area Schools partnered with 3 local beef producers for the #schoolmeals: S&J Farms, Kornder Farms, and BAMF Meats LLC.

These partnerships helped the district expand its #FarmtoSchool efforts, allowing students to enjoy more locally grown meals throughout the school year! [3/4]

The romaine lettuce was harvested by students at Glendale Elementary from the school's garden tower.

The pea shoot microgreens were provided by Matt Arrends of Spring Lake Farms, a Prior Lake graduate committed to nourishing the local area through sustainable farming practices. [2/x]
