"The incoming Czech government led by oligarch Andrej Babiš is yet another example of how anti-green & anti-climate agenda operates in Central & Eastern Europe."

Freedom of assembly is a core pillar of any democracy.

We stand with Mayor Karácsony, Pécs Pride organiser Géza Buzás-Hábel, and everyone now facing criminal charges despite having committed no crime.

We will continue to defend freedom against oppression.

We are at a

Over 80% of reefs in over 80 countries

They are

vital for food security,

contribute trillions to the global economy.

🪸 The planet is on the brink of its first catastrophic climate tipping point.

This will translate into more floods, droughts, heatwaves and wildfires in our backyards.

🇪🇺 We urge the EU leaders to be ambitious in their climate targets.

Today, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will meet with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić. At a moment when Serbian citizens are reeling from repression, violence, and grief, this visit is profoundly inappropriate and politically misguided. It risks signalling that the European Union’s values of democracy, freedom and accountability are negotiable.

“As the guardian of the EU treaties and the highest representative of all European citizens, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has a duty to defend the rule of law, freedom of expression, and the right to peaceful protest. It is deeply regrettable that von der Leyen honours Vučić with an official visit without visible reservations, while his regime unlawfully detains students and opposition members and violently represses protesters. This is not a moment for photo opportunities and handshakes, but for courage and moral clarity. The EU must stand up for the rights and freedoms of the Serbian people,” said Vula Tsetsi, Co-chair of the European Green Party.

This is not a moment for photo opportunities and handshakes, but for courage and moral clarity. The EU must stand up for the rights and freedoms of the Serbian people,” said Vula Tsetsi, Co-chair of the European Green Party.

The tragic collapse of the Novi Sad train station roof on 1 November 2024 killed 16 people and exposed chronic corruption and impunity at the heart of the Vučić’ regime. Nearly a year later, the victims’ families still await justice. Protests demanding accountability have been violently dispersed, while independent journalists continue to face intimidation.

"We Greens firmly believe that the people of Serbia must be allowed to join the EU community if they want so. We also support the legitimate aspirations of its people to live in a free, democratic and just society. The European Commission must use its political weight to push Vučić to free and fair elections in the short term, and a peaceful transition of power if that is the people’s choice. EU accession talks must serve as leverage for democracy, not a reward for repression. If the Commission allows this visit to proceed without clear conditions and outspoken demands for justice, it will be remembered as the moment Europe lost its moral compass, and caved in to another autocrat”, Co-chair Ciarán Cuffe of the European Green Party added.

The European Green Party calls on President von der Leyen to:
- Publicly demand Vučić for full accountability and transparency in the Novi Sad tragedy investigations.
- Condition EU funds and accession steps on tangible progress in judicial independence, media freedom, and election integrity.
- Stand visibly and vocally with the Serbian people who call for fair and free elections, and not with those who silence them. Students and the opposition are for months calling for elections.

@vulatsetsi.bsky.social, @rasmusnordqvist.bsky.social & the European Greens stand with the Serbian Green Party & with the Serbian people as they protest Vučić’s autocracy.

The people are demanding change, a more democratic governance. It is horrifying that they are met with violence and beatings.

Vučić’s threats will not deter us! 🇷🇸

What we witnessed yesterday is the authoritarianism that Serbian citizens face daily. Our solidarity is with them, their courage in defending democracy deserves support, not hostility.

This heatwave is brutal. Temperatures above 40°C in June across France, Spain, Italy...

We still hear from right-wing politicians that “it’s just summer.” It’s not. This is the climate crisis courtesy of the fossil fuels industry. It’s not normal.

European Green Party Co-Chair Ciarán Cuffe added: “Orbán’s shock‑troop tactics and repression are far from reflecting the views of most Hungarians. Our presence is a clear message: we stand with all who fight for democratic freedoms, LGBTQI+ rights, and the rule of law in Hungary.”

Párbeszéd - A Zöldek Pártja became a member of the European Green Party in 2023. This weekend’s delegation includes Ernest Urtasun (Spain’s Green Minister of Culture), Yolanda Díaz (Second Deputy Prime Minister of Spain and party leader of Sumar), Felix Banaszak (German Greens co-leader), 20 Green MEPs and numerous Green MPs and party members.

Vula Tsetsi, co-chair of the European Green Party said “in the face of the dramatic and inhumane situation in Gaza, and the mounting toll of civilian lives — including the deaths of children — there is no time to wait. The European Union has a moral and political responsibility to act immediately to save lives. We therefore call on the European Commission to immediately suspend the EU-Israel Association Agreement. This is possible in line with Article 2, due to the continued and systematic violations of international law and human rights. Especially when it comes to the trade aspect of the Association Agreement, the European Commission has broad powers to act fast. Secondly, we call for an embargo on the exports of arms and equipment used to fuel war in Gaza and the expansion of illegal settlements.”

EU humanitarian aid must be allowed to immediately reach those who are starving, and needs to be scaled up in the coming days. The time for statements has passed. Europe must uphold its legal obligations and its ethical commitments. Civilians are being starved and killed while international law is disregarded with impunity. This cannot continue. The credibility of the European Union, and its commitment to peace and human dignity, depends on its actions now.”

Brussels, 14 May - The European Green Party is pleased to announce that the Green Mayor of Budapest, Gergely Karácsony, will join Brussels Pride on 17 May to underline the solidarity of Brussels Pride with Budapest Pride - which Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has banned, but which organisers have vowed to go ahead with.

Vula Tsetsi, co-chair of the European Green Party, announced: "The European Green Party stands firmly with the LGBTIQ+ community whose rights are under attack by the authoritarian leaders around the world, including in Europe. Orbán's attempts to ban Budapest Pride and to further restrict the rights of the LGBTIQ+ community through constitutional reforms are outrageous. That is why the European Greens are happy that the Mayor of Budapest will join us at the Brussels Pride. From Brussels to Budapest, we say loudly - Pride is not just a celebration, it is a protest, and it is needed now more than ever.

We know from history that if LGBTIQ+ communities are targeted first, others will inevitably follow. These attacks are an attempt to undermine the freedom to express oneself, to gather and to live openly. But rainbows can’t be silenced. Pride is a family event, a moment of joy, visibility and courage for everyone."

Gergely Karácsony has been Mayor of Budapest since 2019 and was be re-elected in 2024. He is a member and was co-leader of Dialogue - The Greens' Party (Párbeszéd - A Zöldek Pártja), which became a member of the European Green Party in 2023. Karácsony describes Budapest as an "island of freedom" in Hungary under the increasingly autocratic rule of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán (Fidesz, formerly affiliated with the European People's Party, now with the Patriots).

Across Europe, Green politicians are joining Pride marches on the ground, hand in hand with civil society partners
such as Reclaim Europe, Forbidden Colours and ILGA Europe. These movements remind us that solidarity is stronger than fear.
