Popularizing science is valuable and worthwhile. But it is not the job of research papers nor should it be the focus of researchers. And it certainly should not be the guiding aim of science.

The general attitude of scientists is and should always be to do science.

It's not entertainment.

Research papers are written to other researchers, engineers, doctors, technicians, and other subject-matter experts. Whether the general public finds them interesting or useful is entirely irrelevant.

Arthur Spirling is also right that we need conversations about what a paper is, what “review” means, and the correct role of generative AI. Perhaps it’d be a good thing if AI finally pushes us to move on from a system where universities spend taxpayer money to commercial publishers to very slowly produce paywalled PDFs2 with outdated results of publicly funded research

And Europe still hasn't ordered SAMP/T, NASAMS, Skyranger, or any other air defence system in large quantities even after 4 years of war.

More Patriot missiles used in Middle East in 3 days than in Ukraine since 2022, Zelensky says President Volodymyr Zelensky reiterated that Ukraine is ready to provide drone interceptors in exchange for missiles, though he did not specify which countries could be involved.

This is a fucking travesty.

“In just three days of fighting in the Middle East, more than 800 Patriot missiles were used — more than Ukraine has received throughout the entire Russian full-scale invasion.”

(A year’s worth of production or more, btw)

What? No. It's not the job of researchers to produce something that people want to read or find useful.

Most people have zero interest in particle physics, molecular science, or insect biology, and their findings may not be immediately useful, but researching them can still be extremely valuable.

Islamistisen hallinnon ja IRGC:n tuhoaminen on iranilaisten etu, vaikka Yhdysvallat tai Israel eivät iranilaisten edusta välittäisikään.

Iran murdered thousands of Iranians just weeks ago. The world did nothing until the US and Israel started this war.

Most people care very little about anything that doesn't directly and immediately impact them, their interests, or their immediate social circles.

That is tragic.

Did you also tweet about Iranians when the regime murdered thousands of Iranians just weeks ago?

Tragedy and farce, at the same time.

Ali Khamenei is dead, and the world is undeniably better for it.

A brutal dictator whose legacy is nothing but oppression at home and a trail of Ukrainian and Middle Eastern blood abroad.

He won't be missed.

Good riddance

The U.S. spent $30 billion to ditch textbooks for laptops and tablets: The result is the first generation less cognitively capable than their parents | Fortune Neuroscientist Jared Cooney Horvath said older generations “screwed up” giving students access to so much technology: “I genuinely hope Gen Z quickly figures that out and gets mad.”

Now THAT's a headline.

The ‘world order’ didn’t collapse bc Russia invaded Ukraine. It collapsed because the free world chose not to stop them.
By refusing to use our wealth & power to defend even a European democracy, we showed dictators everywhere that aggression pays.
That was the death blow. We did this to ourselves.

If I told you in March 2022 that four years later Ukraine would still hold the line against Russia’s full force, you would have been shocked.

Do not let time blind you.

Ukraine’s survival is a massive victory.

Russia failed to erase them and will continue to fail

The second army in the world is fighting for nothing.

Russia went from controlling 30% of Ukraine in March 2022 to just 20% today.

They cannot even hold a single new regional capital. 0/23!

Total strategic failure!

The strategy against Europe is always "divide and conquer."

Whether it's Russian disinformation or Big Tech lobbying, the goal is to break our regulatory power.

They hate the EU because it works.

If we stay united, they lose.

If we fracture, they own us
