Dear Shabana,
I notice today that you referred to me in your speech on immigration at the IPPR think tank.
You said: β€œA party leader should not be on the beaches of France encouraging people to
make a perilous crossing on small boats.”
I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised especially after the hateful Labour campaign in Gorton
and Denton, but this is just the latest in a string of lies peddled by a discredited Government
who intentionally fan the flames of racism and division.
When I went to Calais, I was not there to encourage people to travel to the UK. I was there
to see at first hand the suffering your Government and successive Governments have done
in demonising migrants in a pathetic bid to pander to the base instincts of Reform and the
flawed strategy of Morgan McSweeney.
As you will know, if you even bothered to research my visit instead of taking Reform talking
points, I was there to witness the brutality of families living in tents in freezing temperatures. I
filled water tanks and picked up litter.
What that visit did do is confirm my belief that if we are to smash the boat gangs and stop
the boats, we need to offer safer and managed routes for migrants to come to this country.
Showing compassion as a politician is not a crime. In fact, we need to see much more of it.
It reminded me of a young MP who in October 2015 spent three days in Lesbos helping
migrants fleeing war-torn Syria. She posted videos on X, talked about handing out water and
croissants to refugees and food parcels.
When she returned to the UK, she wrote a very moving piece in the New Statesman. She
said β€œwe have to work with our European partners and create new, safe, and legal routes for
refugees to get to Europe. We cannot abandon them to their fate, left as prey for smugglers
whilst risking death on the seas.”
She said β€œmaybe we can make ourselves feel better by saying no-one is making them get on
the boats. And again, the Home Secretary is not entirely wrong when …

Dear Shabana,

Let's clear some things up around migration and remember we're talking about people's lives.

'We are delighted that community rooms in tower blocks are bookable again' Councillors Jemphrey and Mohamud say spaces to gather and socialise are vital

During Covid, community room access was generally restricted to working hours only. Not practical for most gatherings, particularly for families. Now, residents can book them again! This was hard work but I'm so happy we were able to do it. #Bristol

In Bristol today we said:
No to racism.
No to anti-migrant hate.
No to anti-Muslim hate.
No to anti-Jewish hate.
No to any and every form of hate that's directed at people whether it's to do with where they come from, the god they worship, or the colour of their skin.

We stand up for one another.

Crowd of 50 involved in street brawl near popular Bristol pub People with face coverings and waving flags were seen involved in a brawl

Heard that an antifascist fundraiser being held in Easton today, was attacked by a group of about 25 masked fascists. They were held at bay by over 100 community members who turned out at short notice. Huge respect to everyone who stopped them. No PasarÑn! ✊️

So it’s Greens versus Reform
Hope versus Hate
A brilliant local candidate who loves her community
Versus a full time grifter bussed in from London
It’s not hard

Under Starmer, recognised refugees can no longer reunite with their children.

Recognised refugees.

Denied the right to reunite with their children.

It’s diabolical. Worse than anything the Tories did. & no, the racists are not & never will be satisfied.

So yes, he’s hated.

Once the investigation results are out, we will have a clearer idea of what exactly led to this tragic loss of life. In the meantime, as a community we will keep fighting for what is needed for our areas and our residents. (3/3)

A huge thank you the emergency services who worked hard to try and save this man's life.

One tragedy is one too many, and sadly there have been several in recent years. We need to provide hope and alternatives for our communities not only within Bristol but nationwide too (2/3)

I assume so, but definitely a question to be raising as the work progresses! Also, having some unisex / gender-inclusive toilets makes a huge amount of sense and can make life so much easier for our trans / non-binary siblings

Ofsted finds no political bias at Bristol school criticised for cancelling MP’s visit Snap inspection of Brunel academy took place after it withdrew invitation to pro-Israel Labour MP Damien Egan

Great to see Keir Starmer and Damien Egan handed their hats on this spurious, partisan and authoritarian project. Parents have a right to object about which people's ideas their children are exposed to. Farage visiting? The Government would not have got involved!
