An applicant recently asked if they had to own certain brands, or buy in certain shops. Absolutely not! Here’s my advice on how to get a uniform look, on a budget. • Leather trousers; smart black leather jeans can also be worn for lots of other stuff. You can often find secondhand pairs too. • Boots. These don’t have to be really tall; you could have DMs, or police patrol boots, or something like that. Again, there’s no need to spend a fortune on big brands. • Shirt. To start out with, I recommend a fabric pilot/police style shirt, ie with epaulettes on the collars. You can buy these sort of shirts from workwear suppliers, for under £20 in the UK, and you can often find them in surplus stores. It gets you the uniform look, way cheaper than a leather one. • Leather tie and/or Sam Browne belt. This is the final element that turns the rest into a uniform. You can often pick up leather ties on sites like eBay or in vintage stores. A Sam Browne belt gives a nice formal look – you can either buy a complete one (military stores can be a good source). Some places sell a shoulder strap, to attach to an existing belt.
