Take a tour of the new cycle parking below Berlin's Potsdamer Platz.
Designed for utility, sport, electric and cargo bikes, it enables a smooth transition to public transport, while taking a disused and uncomfortable private retail corridor and reimagining it as a safe and inviting community space.
You've got your traffic right when the sound of birds and people talking is louder than rush hour traffic!
Utrecht has assessed the impact on public transport. These will remain limited. Consultations have also been held with emergency services, who anticipate no problems with response times.
After implementation, Utrecht will monitor the impact, including on road safety, speed, and noise pollution.
To improve road safety, Utrecht will lower the speed limit from 50 to 30 km/h on approximately 240 streets where cyclists and motorists share the road. This will be done overnight later this year, so that the change takes effect simultaneously on all streets. www.duic.nl/algemeen/alg...
Wednesday morning rush hour at Utrecht Central Station. Seen from two perspectives.
above, a highway, below, a green canal space
Before and after: 5 years ago, Utrecht restored the Catharijnesingel.
Once filled in during the 1970s to make way for traffic, the historic canal now flows again around the old city, lined with pedestrian paths, bike lanes, and a park-like landscape.

Cycling through Winter Wonderland!
π«‘
Snow, bicycles, and a remarkably quiet morning commute. New post and video with almost eight minutes of calm from Utrecht.
If you can't get enough of winter images from the Netherlands, watch this video in which I cycle through Utrecht for over half an hour.

Only in Utrecht: Miffy snowmen playing hide and seek π
No, I don't have winter tires. Neither have I made any temporary adjustments to my bike, such as lowering the saddle or reducing tire pressure.
Cycling through the snow continues to produce beautiful images. The main routes are generally well-maintained, but even on roads that haven't been gritted, cycling is still good for now.
Happy New Year!
After a restful break followed by a beautiful blanketing of snow, the Dutch Cycling Embassy is rolling into 2026 with new energy and enthusiasm for what promises to be a landmark yearβincluding celebrating our 15th anniversary. Watch this space!

Dutch people doing Dutch things!
The Utrecht morning rush hour in the snow did not disappoint!
Photo of parents and children walking through the snow to arrive at school.
The magical effect of snow: it liberates kids from being taken to school by car.
Instead of the constant stream of cars dropping off kids, most of them are now walking to school!
It sure was!
It's dark and snowing. So no reason at all NOT to hop on our bikes for a family visit on the other side of town!

For those who need it: here's some distraction for today's political news.
I knew your post could come in handy someday sooner or later π

Buy another bike π
In 2025, I cycled well over 6,000 km.
My bike maintenance costs were around β¬400 (which is exceptionally high for me). So, converted, I cycled for a little more than 6 cents per kilometer.
So much for this, according to some, elitist lifestyle π
Happy 2026! π
