Ah interesting, thanks. Some sort of dispositional account seems right to me, so I'm keen to see their arguments against it

There's a dispositional account in the vicinity that seems to get around that objection. Do they discuss it? (I should just read the paper...)

Success in academia often has more to do with luck, patronage and the job market than “hard work”.
Good academics acknowledge this.
I worked hard, but I was in the right place at the right time on occasion. Historians far more talented than I have fallen between the cracks.

That neuroscientist was *so* confident that philosophy was antequated nonsense, just like this neuroscientist. And yet they ridiculed opposing views. (Though I think in both cases they didn't really understand what their target was saying.)

Neuroscience needs more philosophy.

In grad school, I saw a philosopher give a talk about mental representations to an interdisciplinary audience. The first question in Q&A was a rude and dismissive comment from a neuroscientist who mocked the idea that anyone would bother talking about representations when studying the brain.

A thought- could it be that there's an implicit goal of providing a reductive account of the constructed category, and an assumption that you'd need this other property to provide that reduction? Not to endorse the assumptions, but I wonder if this is going on in the background

One problem is we focus implicitly on truth as an exercise of the authority of sovereign knowers, to the exclusion of truth as something we owe to others. Perhaps the current condition is not so much 'post-truth' (as there's plenty of truth-claims being asserted) as 'truth without truthfulness.'

you have to be limber if you want to demonstrate an illusion of amodal completion with your body

It seems inevitable, though maybe not as a bias in the model so much as hidden cues in prompts. Google could easily feed Adsense data into prompts as a low-tech method. Sorta surprising we haven't seen it yet

nozick uses the term in philosophical explanations, so i'd guess johnston picked it up there. dunno if it was used earlier

So now we have a "Philosophical Underclass" feed that collects posts with #philosophicalunderclass. Let's see how this goes.

In 2010, anti-copyright activist Aaron Swartz hanged himself after being prosecuted to the full extent of the law for making copyrighted academic publications freely available. Today, academic publishers are insisting those copyrights be lifted to feed the corporate AI slop machine.

yeah, i suppose it's just a more sophisticated modeling technique. I agree it won't be useful for genuinely new psychology without validating on humans

I think it would depend on how novel the new cases are. I imagine there could be a range of moderate novelty cases where replicas prove useful, like polling and other kinds of preference metrics

I like your way of thinking about it. The AI is a proxy for how others may interpret your decision in your shoes, and maybe it's very rough evidence about what you should do. Re privacy, let's stipulate that the information would be totally secure, even if that's unrealistic

If you could teach an AI about your life, personality, and values, would you consult it on big decisions? Why or why not?
