When had their circumstances have been different they would have ended up the exact same place that Voldemort and Johnny did. The only difference is that in Cobra Kai they eventually get their shit together and work it out.
Furthermore, the only reason that we see Danny, and Dumbledore as the good guys is because they are more conventionally attractive... Danny with his beautiful house and business, and Dumbledore with his nose and reputable position
Voldemort and Dumbledore have a past. They are also still working out their issues and what they feel is a fight against good and evil, but really they're both brainwashing children to fight their battles for them.
Daniel and Johnny, are 2 grown men that have a history from high school that would have been so much better had they just explored that sexual tension but instead they let it fester. Now they are working out that aggravation by collecting and fighting teenagers like pokémon
