Spanish PM Pedro Sánchez:

You may have heard that Spain is alone. They’re the same people who said that when we recognized the State of Palestine, and then others followed.

We are not alone — we are the first. Those who will end up alone are the ones defending the indefensible.

A half-empty conference hall, but a packed left fringe Vince Mills reports on the recent Scottish Labour Party conference. Scottish Labour Party conference on the last Friday of February was a strange affair. It happened, of course, on the day after the disastrous (well, disastrous for Labour) Gorton and Denton by election, a string of polls saying that the Scottish Labour Party (SLP) was toast in the May Scottish Parliament elections and a futile attempt by Anas Sarwar to defenestrate his best pal Keir Starmer, a couple of weeks previously. None of this would have been obvious to a passer-by who had inadvertently found themselves drawn into Paisley Town Hall’s half empty main assembly space.

Government attacks on migrant rights intensify Shabana Mahmood’s attack on migrant rights continues. Following her announcement to double – and in some cases, triple – the length of time that migrants have to wait before getting settled status, the Home Secretary has now opened several new fronts. Refugees targeted The first is the decision that all new refugees entering the UK will be told that their right to stay is only temporary, to be reviewed every thirty months. The copying of Denmark’s draconian system has been widely criticised, not least by the Law Society of England and Wales’s President, …

Why I am running for Labour’s National Policy Forum By Eleanor Woolstencroft Time after time, young people in the North East have been left behind. Austerity saddled us with crumbling schools, a blatant lack of public services, and little to no sense of opportunity. Now we face rising tuition fees, the managed decline of infrastructure, and no hope of ever owning a home. We have demonstrated that Labour can do better for young people in the North East. This Government has increased minimum wage and introduced the Renters’ Reform Act - but there is so much more to be done.

Jeremy Corbyn tables Bill to require parliamentary approval for the foreign use of UK military bases The Presentation Bill, entitled the Military Action (Parliamentary Approval) Bill, is co-sponsored by Green, Independent and Labour MPs. Corbyn tabled the Bill in response to Keir Starmer’s decision to allow the US to use UK military bases in the war against Iran. The full title of Bill is: “Bill to require parliamentary approval for the deployment of UK armed forces and military equipment for armed conflict; to require parliamentary approval for the granting of permission by Ministers for use of UK military bases and equipment by other nations for armed conflict; to require the withdrawal of that permission in circumstances where parliamentary approval is not granted; to provide for certain exemptions from these requirements; to make provision for retrospective parliamentary approval in certain circumstances; and for connected purposes.”

Why Labour Must Recommit to 0.7% Britain must lead with solidarity, not retreat into short-termism, argues Imran Hussain MP. When Britain chose to spend 0.7% of our Gross National Income on international development, it was never an act of charity. It was a statement of values. It said that in an interconnected world, we would not turn away from hunger, conflict, disease or climate catastrophe. It said that we understood prevention is wiser than crisis management. That commitment, rooted in a 1970 UN resolution, was finally met by the UK in 2013 and enshrined in law through the International Development (Official Development Assistance Target) Act 2015.

Women for Palestine! Kathryn Johnson previews an important meeting next week. As war spreads, the Starmer leadership weakens and the assaults on our own democracy grow, we must reach out to a wider audience in the UK and do more to stand firm with the Palestinians. While most Britons express horror at the impact of the conflict on civilians, far fewer know about the century-old responsibility and ongoing complicity of British Governments in the occupation and destruction of Palestine. Most were concerned that the Israeli hostages were returned but few know of the almost 11,000 Palestinians in Israeli jails - more than double pre-October 2023 - of the 4,000 held with no charge, and no trial, and that at least 400 are children.

Global events have increased the urgency to invest in our economy’s foundations, says Women’s Budget Group “The real barriers to the level of investment needed are a fiscal framework that is not fit for purpose.” Dr Daniella Jenkins responds to Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ Spring Forecast. The Chancellor's decision to stick to a single fiscal event this year brings a welcome measure of stability after the rumour-fuelled chaos of last autumn’s Budget. Falling inflation and lower energy bills will bring some relief - especially for low-income families - and show that targeted action to bring down the cost of living works. But the US and Israel’s military action in Iran and the escalating conflict make it only too real how shifting geopolitics continue to create a volatile external economic environment.

Majority of Brits oppose illegal war on Iran The US’s war on Iran is illegal according to the United Nations Charter and unconstitutional under domestic law, say the US group Veterans for Peace. A war of aggression and of choice, it’s also largely based on lies. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has now admitted as much. Israel’s determination to attack Iran and the certainty that US troops would be targeted in response forced the Trump administration to take pre-emptive strikes, he said. So much for the rhetoric about a “defensive war”. Hours before President Donald Trump began bombing Iran, the…

This policy will cause immense harm, making it harder for refugees to integrate into our communities and find work, as they will be living under constant threat of removal.

Anyone can see how destabilising and deeply counterproductive this decision is. [2/2]

I am appalled that the government has scrapped permanent refugee status for those seeking safety in the UK.

From today, refugees entering the country will face reviews every 30 months and be forced to return if their country is deemed “safe”. [1/2]

Animal welfare in Wales Senedd member Mike Hedges outlines what still needs to be done. How we treat animals is a sign of the type of society we are and want to be. If we allow animals to be mistreated either via ignorance or cruelty, then it reflects badly on us. There is substantial evidence that a wide range of animals are sentient beings. This means they have the capacity to experience positive and negative feelings such as pleasure, joy, pain and distress. Progress has been made in recent years in Wales. We have passed a law on wild animals in circuses, one on banning snares and one making it compulsory for CCTV to be installed in all areas where live animals are unloaded, kept, handled and stunned.
