Whenever recommendation forms ask me to rate an applicant on "self-awareness" I always say "did not observe" on account of being unable to observe other's mental states. Sorry, MIT, even though you've given me a Likert scale, I simply can't tell you if this applicant has higher-order consciousness!

Everyone wants to talk about "the hard problem of consciousness" but no one seems interested in identifying the psychopath who locked Mary in a black and white room for long enough for her to learn every physical fact about color.
