That’s how I felt/feel about the PS5, the step up in technology between PS4 and PS5 wasn’t as large as the difference between PS3 and PS4, so I didn’t feel incentivised to get a PS5.

I agree that misdirection is important narratively, but Chekhov’s rice didn’t give any misdirection. Like what did it misdirect? That it was going to have payoff, but it didn’t?

That’s not misdirection, it was a narrative thread that led nowhere. It was just “a thing that happened”.
