Wilkie wins silver in the women’s para biathlon sprint standing event. It’s her EIGHTH Paralympic medal. One of Canada’s flag bearers for these Games. Outstanding.
A massive crowd here in Cortina for the opening day of Paralympic competition.
They love ski racing in these parts. Fans from around the world have gathered to cheer on the para alpine skiers.

In his Paralympic debut, Kalle Ericsson alongside his guide Sierra Smith wins silver in the men’s visually impaired downhill event. A great start for the Canadians in Cortina.
Canada’s Mollie Jepsen just revealed to me she suffered an injury one month ago and didn’t know if she’d be able to compete at the Paralympics.
She couldn’t walk two weeks ago.
She just finished 4th in the downhill event. An extraordinary story of resilience.

LET THE GAMES BEGIN
The 2026 Winter Paralympics are officially open. The spotlight is on 611 athletes from around the world, 50 of them from Canada.
Competition starts Saturday morning. Watch every event live on CBC Gem throughout the Paralympics.
Para alpine final training was cancelled today.
The competition jury decided to cancel today’s Downhill Training due to weather conditions and in order to preserve the slope ahead of the competition.
Warm weather expected the rest of the way. Not ideal for the athletes.

Ina is making her FIFTH Paralympics appearance. Collinda is in her second Games.

Several athletes have been taken to hospital during training crashes. The course is now being changed due to safety issues. Training cancelled this morning.
Talked with 🇨🇦 Tyler Turner about it. He’s frustrated and disappointed.

Having talked with the athletes they are hungry for medals. Could be quite the opening day for this team.

UNDEFEATED ROUND ROBIN
Gushue defeats Jacobs 4-2 and St. John’s is rocking.
The b’ys from the Rock post an 8-0 record going into the playoffs and lock up first place in Pool A. Some sorta storybook stuff brewing here folks.
An offensive explosion in the 9th end.
Two for Gushue to take a 4-2 lead on Jacobs. It’s the first deuce of the game.
Jacobs has hammer in the 10th end.

Stolen curling rocks update.
The search continues.
I just heard back from the organizing committee who tells me authorities are still investigating two curling rocks stolen from the Paralympic venue,
The sun is slowly starting to set here in Cortina on the eve of the Paralympics Opening Ceremony.
They will light this cauldron and the cauldron in Milano, just like they did during the Olympics.
I’ll be here tomorrow night with coverage and then let the Games begin.

A record number of athletes and nations are competing at these Winter Games.
We’ve learned seven nations are boycotting the Opening Ceremony due to Russia and Belarus inclusion. Other nations not attending due to competition the next day.

PARALYMPIC DEBUT
Canadian para alpine skier Kalle Eriksson and his skiing guide Sierra Smith are making their Paralympic debut here in Cortina.
They’re brimming with confidence after two very strong training days. It all starts for them on Saturday.
Canada’s Mollie Jepsen just finished her second downhill training run ahead of Saturday’s opening day of competition.
This is her third Paralympics.
She’s a six-time Paralympic medallist, including two gold, and a podium threat once again here in Cortina.

Dunstone was pushed to the limit by Yukon.
But makes it the hit and stick for a 6-5 win.
Dunstone now 5-1 at the Brier.
Yukon’s Scoffin and Manitoba’s Dunstone tied 5-5 heading to the 10th end. Dunstone has hammer.
How about this. Yukon has defeated Manitoba at the Brier before. It happened in 2019.
Yukon’s Solberg stole the win in the 10th end over Manitoba’s McEwen in 2019.
Kevin Koe is into the playoffs at the Brier.
He's 6-0 after an 8-2 victory over Northern Ontario.
Koe, who turned 51 in January, still playing at an extremely high level. Watch out folks.
