Whenever I see people asking for advice on 'how to become a comics writer', I just think of this:
A collection of past weirdos
A woman rides on the back of a dragon with a bow and arrow over a blasted landscape.
A barbarian stands surrounded by skeletons in a throneroom backlit in red
A sleep paralysis demon sits atop a burned out tank against a crimson sky
Elric of Melnibone is gently pushed forward into the future by an unseen breeze, he's stood atop a boat surrounded by candles
Hello #Portfolioday
My name is Jimmy Makepeace and I am an illustrator and sometimes animator based in Bristol UK.

Paroxysm 5 Kickstarter is still going for a few more days. It includes my comic about life and death around an occulted ocean that was ripped open in the middle of 1930s America. It is GOOD and WEIRD. Dark adventure, gags, chills, and ELDRITCH HAUNTS. www.kickstarter.com/projects/mys...
Usually I'm big on improvising/discovery writing. It's the only way I can get rich details. I just write (or sketch) over and over again until setting facts emerge, some loose character sketches poke through. But for most of it, writing and editing feels basically identical to me.
Illustration: A morbid harpy sits in a large nest with instruments laid about. Sheβs smiling mysteriously and holda an ornate glass-bulbed horn.

Dear readers, my comic, "The Dust Bowl Warlock," will be in Paroxysm Vol. 5, alongside my monstrous peers.
A rampaging sorcerer is desperate to attain his god's favor, and the local shantytown needs him him stop. Anarchic, tender, and unrelentingly dark.

i'm selling a guitar on marketplace and some doorknob offered me a pixelart nft of the same guitar in trade and sent me an image of it and told me it was a 1 of 1 so i downloaded it and replied that now it was a 1 of 2 and this was the last thing he said before i blocked him

If you're an indie developer, you should hang this screenshot on your wall and use it as inspiration to never give up
The thesis:
It's actually good to spend 5 years on a single double-sized comicbook issue
The proof:
Have only self published up until this point. My understanding is the only advantages are the cash advance (tiny, even if paid on time) and access to bookstores without having to reach out directly. In theory, access to an editor can make the book sell better too but I remain unconvinced of that one
