Is it a good sign for a society when even the shills of capitalism have moved on from hopeful aspiration (use our products to get what you want) to hopeless resignation (use our products to pretend you got what you want)?
If you wanna touch up your photos to make everything look better & more attractive, whatever, I don't think it's healthy for society that everyone does it, but at least at its heart is just good ol fashioned vanity.
Making up the reality depicted in your personal photos is something else entirely.
I remember when phone companies wanted cool people to buy their phones so their ads would show cool people doing cool things with them.
Now they're directly advertising to unhappy losers who are trying to escape the reality of their lives.
The best use case companies like Samsung can come up with for the genAI they're shoving into everything is just lying to yourself and/or the world. It's for faking your life.
There's a Samsung phone ad where people take a photo of themselves at a night party, then add their dog and make the night into day.
Why even take that photo? What is the point of recording your fake life?

I remember learning about the Hays Code in film school and how it made it so that any amoral protagonist had to meet karmic justice by the end of the film and going “wow, that’s really silly” and then once a week I log online and see people argue that we need stuff like that now or it’s problematic
This is somehow the most haunting bit of in-game lore I have ever read.

Starting left of frame we see yellow Ignatz Mouse having just thrown a brick which is sailing across the center of the frame and in another instant will bash the oblivious Krazy Kat (a blue bipedal cartoon cat wearing a red scarf) in the back of the head as he walks innocently to the right. Everything is drawn in rough black pen and colored in pale washes. A speech bubble from Ignatz reads ‘Maybe it will…’, the word ’Happen’ appears in the whooshing trail of the sailing brick, and a final speech bubble belonging to the Kat reads ‘…Today’.
