I’m surprised to be writing this—but thank you for sharing Fitzhugh’s thought. It’s crucial to shed light on this tradition of US thinking and that you use your platform to do so, to share the nuances of the nation’s history when efforts to simplify it are legion, is incredibly valuable to us all.

Happy to volunteer! Great grandfather, Louis Duquette, moved to VT at some point around the turn of the 20c. Haven’t found birth certificate yet in Canada bc I haven’t looked much and there were so many Louis Duquettes

This is what I call the tyrannical style in American Tyrannies in the Long Age of Napoleon (Oxford 2023)—shameless plug

The internet is furious over the Vanity Fair Trump cabinet portraits. But the photographer says the goal was “to reveal something more real” The internet is furious over Christopher Anderson's Vanity Fair Trump cabinet portraits. But American politics do not feel pretty right now, so why should the portraits be pretty?

Realism in the news.

This was an unforced error. An obvious trap. And, as a college prof of two decades, not great teaching. Of course the essay sucked—that doesn’t mean you take the bait

Many, many Americans have a very hard time understanding words. By which I mean actual words disappear or become unimportant so that various fantasies can persist unchallenged. Where race is involved, the tendency becomes overwhelming.

All of which is a long way of saying, yup. That surely happens.
