Two political families with histories of large-scale abuse are competing for public favor in the Philippines. The political competition revolves around reputational damage control rather than meaningful change or accountability. No policy arguments, only mudslinging. A spectacle, and a grim one.

The Philippines has gained in education parity.‼️ But this has not translated to economic participation and political empowerment, with the country consistently among the low performers in the health subindex ‼️

Flew to Germany with @sosyolohija.bsky.social to speak at ICI Berlin on queer crossings in global contexts. We shared how the legacy of colonial legal regimes governs aspects of gender in social and political life in the Philippines, and in what ways we can engage in critical examination.
