For those who don't know me very well, I'm Sam, a writer and PhD researcher. When I'm not doing those things, I have a blog helping indie writers promote their latest books, because as the author of 3 of them I know how hard that is! If you have one to promote, get in touch.

I had a lot of fun being interviewed by award-winning Durham poet Sam Szanto, and hope you enjoy it too!

Here's a snippet to start you off: β€˜Poetry taps into the dark river of our deepest selves that runs below our lives, and which is both bitter and sweet.’

POEM 299: "Day of the Dead" by Sam Szanto (@samszanto.bsky.social)

"The babies know us only by our heart
beats. My child is handed to me.
I press my face to hers and rock,
skin to skin, cradling and crying
and kissing and crooning."

Thursday Throwback
I confided in you about how much I hated the new flat. It was small and poky, and I had to get a bus to school. It was farther to Grandma’s house, too, so I didn’t get to have Battenberg cake and jam tarts with her every Sunday anymore. Worst of all, Mum was sad all the time, unless she was shouting down the phone at Dad. You came into my bed with me, some nights, to cheer me up. Nothing I ever did was wrong in your eyes.

This week’s Thursday Throwback is My Best Friend by Sam Szanto @samszanto.bsky.social

Through the narrator’s recollection of their childhood, the piece explores resonant themes of loss, change, and growing up. It's poignant and human, with a compelling twist.

Read it now in Issue 3.
