We donβt talk enough about how morally depraved the tech industry turned out to be. Every single ounce of their self-regarding statements of values was an outright lie.

The Covid-19 pandemic was a once-a-century impact on mortality worldwide. And that impact varied among countries depending on policy choices.
BUT
As bad as the height of pandemic was in Canada (purple arrow) it would be far worse to have the misfortune to be born an American (green arrow).

I'm organizing & will moderate a webinar about this next month, stay tuned for details; the aim is to shine a light on this crisis, bringing historical, human rights, public health, and psychological perspectives.....
𧡠Trump administration AI policy is widely described as deregulatory. This description is misleading. What's happening is not the absence of governance but its rearrangement--intensive state intervention operating through mechanisms we don't typically call regulation. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
The girlsβ school in Iran, where 165 people were killed by an apparent US-Israeli attack, was hit with two strikes, with the second missile killing sheltering survivors, two first responders and the parent of a slain child have told Middle East Eye.

Israel has closed all the crossings into Gaza and reimposed total siege.
Thanks so much to @melodyschreiber.com for not only writing about this issue, but quoting trans scientists as experts!
Honestly vaccines have been about a lot of things over the years and often the first vaccine for a disease is not the last. The "proliferation of talking heads" that has evolved over the past 40-odd years combined by "anxious life" tends to not leave much space for considered conversations...
@wytamma.bsky.social 's WASM tools have transformed my experience of teaching Python to first year undergraduate biologists this year. Since last year, I've been teaching ~400 undergrads how to code (functions, lists, dictionaries, loops) over (one hour intro lecture +) two 2-hour practicals. 1/n
The full results of the STOMP trial are now published in @nejm.org

As vast machines of murder sail into the Persian Gulf, I can almost understand the desire to see the Iranian regime as courageous underdogs. This conversation between the Roja Collective and Leila Hossein Zadeh is a good antidote to that perspective: crimethinc.com/2026/02/18/a...
Londonβs βworst mass eviction in recent historyβ is underway; hundreds of households across London told to get out of their homes this week by the same landlord, ahead of the renters rights act. The landlord? Billionaire Asif Azizβs Criterion Capital. www.londoncentric.media/p/asif-aziz-...
Yep! I also finished it days ago. It was fascinating reading as someone who has been "raised" in the Comprehensive Primary Health care school of thought: spotting every limitation of the lessons while applauding both the spirited fight and what we can all take from it

I really am looking forward to getting my hands on a copy of this book!
Superb reporting from @katherineeban.bsky.social for @rollingstone.com on the scandal around the RFK-fueled, unethical HBV vaccine study in Guinea Bissau that horrified CDC staff, scientists and ethicists around the world. www.rollingstone.com/politics/pol...
THREAD: A first for me: I've co-produced an episode of Al Jazeera's The Listening Post, and it airs tomorrow!
Outrage over genocide in Gaza has led to Israel losing the streets & the campuses of the western world.
So, Israel has recently decided to try selling its narrative...to Africans.
Ethiopia and Eritrea are preparing for full-scale war again. One side backed by the UAE and the Nobel Peace Prize (thank you again for awarding the peace prize to a genocider), another side backed by Egypt and the Saudis. My whole life has been wars between Ethiopia and Eritrea.

I spoke with @melodyschreiber.com about the deep irony of Bhattacharya serving as Acting Director of CDC & Director of NIH simultaneously.
For years, he has advocated for separation between these role, framing this type of arrangement as a conflict of interest that would have chilling effects.
And putting tylenol in the same category as alcohol. Sheesh.
And still insisting that they're the leaders of the international community and the voice of morality. Not much most of us can do about states, but there's a lot we can do in all our communities about raising up voices that genuinely do speak from an orientation towards equity and solidarity!

Remember this history as we remember this man.
I often think about the fact that if the FBI et al had not killed Fred Hampton, he would be 78 today. Younger than Jesse Jackson was. Must have felt strange to outlive many of your contemporaries by decades.
me (writing an essay about a breakfast sandwich): man the dutch really do not get enough smoke for how fucking brutal they were as an empire. god damn they sucked they were terrible
Only till 1799. So e.g. the governership of Daendels and e.g. the deaths of thousands in building the Great Post Road (1808 to 1811) happened in a colony run by the Dutch state. Similarly the Aceh war, the subjugation of Bali, the "cultivation system", etc
