My lukewarm ttrpg take is that it's better to give players specific options of paths to choose, and let them override that, than let them do anything. This includes combat.

Theatre of the mind especially works better when you topline the immediate threats to the acting character and to the party.

Cause Trek has always had plenty of duff episodes that didn't land, it's always had pretty obvious character vehicles. Is my issue just that these aren't my comfort characters and so I want to give it a hard time?

That's the thought I have to interrogate before I can say "This is bad."

The question I find myself asking though is how much of this is Star Trek moving away from me and what I want and more towards the audience of the future. Is it just nostalgia and me getting old?

The plots are fine in concept but lack teeth. I don't feel what we learn about the characters is emerging from the story as much as them as they skim across the surface of them, and everyone is shacking and breaking up like Fleetwood Mac, so why would I care about any of these romances?

I'm liking Strange New Worlds season 3 less, it seems to be getting further and further from what I felt was the draw of Season 1; a more traditional mode of Star Trek in format but with a modern sensibility.

Honestly I like Starfleet Academy so much more than I thought I would given how much I've always hated the Academy concept. But a lot of that is to do with the cast and characters, whenever they're at the forefront the show sings.

Having caught up on Starfleet Academy and finally watched most of S3 Strange New Worlds and I am trying to sift my own feelings about what are legitimate criticisms and what is me being hung up on the aesthetics and tone that is nostalgic to me.
