It was morally, fiscally and structurally bankrupt - but the revolution turned into an ouroboros and ate itself before it could leave a lasting impact - it arguably caused France a century of instability. Revolutions can be good, this one was not in the short term. 1/

I have the right brain wiring for writing/reading/using a shell, but it should never be the default for 85% of the population, it requires too much learning to be adopted by most - in essence its an 'expert system' - most FOSS stuff is designed as expert systems.

Users expect their software to work vaguely like other products in that space - you shouldnt need special training on a new word processor if you've used one before - but people keep trying to reinvent the UX wheel.
