Why a NASA satellite that scientists and farmers rely on may be destroyed on purpose
The Trump administration has asked NASA staffers to draw up plans to end at least two satellite missions that measure carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, according to current and former NASA employees.
Head of NASA Sean Duffy intends to destroy a satellite that collects key data on carbon dioxide and plant health, by causing it to burn up in the atmosphere. The U.S. Dept of Agriculture and private agriculture firms use the data to forecast crop yield, drought conditions and more.

I know your R reps are garbage and it feels pointless to call them.
But please call them today and tell them not to vote for Trump's murderous budget.
The call costs nothing. The fact that it MIGHT save lives is all that matters.

π the Senate just passed that awful cruel budget bill, but itβs not over yet. Now it goes back to the House to vote.
If you have a Republican member of Congress: Call, email, comment on all their social posts, @ them. Tell them to vote NO. Get your friends to do it too. βοΈ: (202) 224-3121

Trump threatens to eviscerate NASA
The Presidential budget proposal is a death sentence for the space agency
I am furiously, flamingly, incandescently, *supernova-levels* of angry right now.
Trump is trying to kill NASA science. And hoo boy, do I have something to say about it.

During commissioning, PUNCHβs NFI instrument captured this image of the new Moon as it passed by the Sun in the sky on April 27, 2025. The new Moon appears full, because it is illuminated by Earthshine (sunlight reflected off Earth). The image helped the PUNCH team confirm that the Moon will not obscure NFIβs view of the corona and solar wind. The dark circle near the bottom is the shadow of NFIβs occulter, which hides the Sun. The occulter, which was not yet fully aligned with the Sun, is surrounded by a narrow bright ring of diffracted light. Around that is a large, hazy circle of stray light glinting off the occulter (the Moon is inside that circle). Outside that is a small, dimmer region of the sky that is less affected by glint.
Serendipitous space beauty to start your weekend.
NASA's new PUNCH mission, designed to study the solar wind, just took this ethereal image of the Moon passing the (blocked out) Sun. The Moon's night side is facing us, but it's beautifully lit by Earthshine. π§ͺπ

A digitally illustrated diagram of the cross-section of a turtle showing how the lungs and muscles supporting them are arranged within the shell. The top part of the illustration shows the turtle with the head out of its shell. "In turtles, the ribs have fused with the shell, forming a rigid box. They canβt expand and contract their lungs like most other vertebrates. Instead, in some species, a muscular sling is used to actively move the lungs. The transverse abdominis and pectoralis muscles contract the lungs for exhalation. The oblique abdominis and serratus muscles expand the lungs for inhalation. "
The second part shows the turtle with its head pulled into its shell, "In turtle species who can retract their head and limbs into their shells, breathing can become a bit more difficult. There is much less room for the lungs to expand, but studies have found that some air remains in the lungs and limited breathing can still occur. (after Landberg et al. 2003)"
Happy #WorldTurtleDay!
Have you ever wondered how turtles breathe inside a rigid box? I made this illustration back when I was teaching Chordate Zoology. It's a subject I find fascinating. πΏπ’
