Saw over the weekend that THE FIFTH SEASON and THE HUNDRED THOUSAND KINGDOMS were both listed among Book Riot's "Best Fantasy Books of the Century (so far)!" Very cool! bookriot.com/best-fantasy...

Scratched up glass upon a painting of a ball

Night falls shortly after. In what the days before the Solstice would be considered the early afternoon, aristocrats from across the Odonic Empire occupy the Palace like an infestation. Though he knows he should restrain his baser urges, he thinks of them as potential meals. There will be hundreds of pockets of fresh blood flitting past him. With each greeting and introduction, all Sasza knows is how he will drink in excessβ€”and how feeding begets lust, and that lust begets more feeding. For his own conscience, it’s best he makes his way through the crowds of attendees like a specter, hyper aware of the meals flowing through the aristocracy’s veins.

Krakow town square behind scratched glass

The rumbling deep in his stomach comes and goes like ocean waves, part hunger, part nausea. He doesn’t want to waste the blood piled before him, like a dog sopping up its own sick. The bestiapir body requires far more blood than his wiry human frame. His stomach stays swollen like a man menstruating. He’s afraid to find out how much more vomiting lies ahead of him.

There is something really wrong with people who need workers to be not just competent, but slavishly fake-happy. "Slavishly" used on purpose, bc that's where this grotesquerie comes from.

We need to talk about Russell Vought – But Properly Why certain mainstream outlets insist on sanitizing Vought as a devout β€œsmall government” conservative – and what actually animates his war against pluralistic democracy

Sunday reading:

I wrote about the aggrieved extremist who is currently firing thousands of federal workers and ravaging state capacity based on conspiratorial nonsense - and about mainstream media’s infuriating tendency to sanitize Russell Vought and the regime he serves.

This week’s piece:

Just so everyone is clear, the main issue in the Supreme Court voting rights case tomorrow is whether it's racist against white people to enforce the Voting Rights Act.

I'm dead serious. We live in incredibly stupid times.

"Don't speak ill of the dead" being made into an unbreakable commandment by a culture that has done so much to shame away and erase any connection to ancestors in the cultures it oppresses is absolutely infuriating.

Watching all these centrist pundits stress the β€œcivility” of Charlie Kirk’s style without addressing the ugliness of his substance is giving me a renewed appreciation of how the civil, polite White Citizens’ Councils conned the same crowd into thinking they were distinct from the cruder Klan.

I shouldn't be shocked, but I'm still always brought up short to realize how many people think "civility" means "white people speaking in relatively calm voices" no matter what vile shit they say.

Charlie Kirk

I won't quote-tweet our main character of the day, but if your complaint is that Charlie Kirk's words are being taken out of context, I'd encourage you to skim through the Media Matters tag for his name. They have hundreds of posts about Kirk and most have longer clips that give the full context.
