I always knew, even at the start of the experiments, but seeing it manifest physically, has had a profound effect.
No matter how many times I see my handspun, or that of others, I fall in love. The visual texture and anticipation of touch is like balm for a stressed soul. As I wrap up and reflect upon my Spindling for Weaving project, I've realised how much intentionality we impart to each twist.
Of course, Kristi Noem deserved to be fired. But rather than spend energy celebrating this Trump setback, let's recognize that the disaster of today’s DHS runs much deeper than the (former) Secretary's incompetence - and keep stepping up the political pressure.
Help save this Iron Age torc. Safeguarding such objects at museums keeps our future available for study and teaching. But that can't happen if it's in private collections, abroad, or worse, melted down for raw materials:

How do you analyse handspun samples? I'm wearing my scientific hat today as I go through my samples and record their grist and twist angle.

Do you smoosh your face into freshly hanked yarn? It's okay if you do, I do. I'll also wind it into a hank, wiggle it at my partner and demand he smoosh it too. I love that he humours me. After the squish, he says something like "oh, that's really soft!"

Unlike handdyed yarn, dyeing wool in a repeatable fashion is more difficult because of how the wool wicks water and draws up dye, and how it takes longer for the acid to chemically alter the surface of the wool so the dye stays permanently. Shifting around hot wool in the dye pan is inadvisable.
Endless Dream. 2025. Acid dyes on Merino wool. Handdyed products are literally works of art. If I kept this recipe, which I haven't, it would be difficult to replicate this colourway precisely.
Silk and wool go together like butter on toast.
