A pedestrianised street with a branch of popular heated foodlike product purveyor Greggs, and a dragon.
Sometimes when I am having difficulty with the universe I remember that in Dundee there is a dragon guarding a branch of Greggs, and this cheers me up.

An Immense World: How animal senses reveal the hidden realms around us by Ed Yong. Title in the centre of the cover, framed by various creatures such as elephants, snakes, and whales.
Ed Yong's An Immense World - it's an absolute delight! (the litany of non-human animal experiments aside)

Black and white photo of Patricia Highsmith with a black cat
To be fair, I also would have let Patricia Highsmith destroy my life in 1960. Here she is with her favorite cat, Spider, who later ended up living with Muriel Spark when Highsmith moved to Europe. Every few years I go on an obsessive Highsmith spree and Iβm afraid that time has come again.

Veneration of the military is a cultic practice used to insulate the state from the banal reality that the primary purpose of the army is murdering brown people and smashing leftist political movements.

Maybe itβs because Iβm a colonial historian but so many of these white nation states seem to behave exactly like they did in the 19th century: βyour leaders arenβt right for you,β βweβre only killing you/colonizing you/installing puppet leaders for your own goodβ

Lots of people saying Gorton and Denton represents this and that in ideological, policy terms. But, really, I don't think I can stress enough how much of a draw "a normal person who lives round here and has a normal job" is compared to "careerist toady bussed in from the Westminster circle-jerk".

Sometimes (often) I think that rather than the annual ridiculous and performative hashtag autism awareness, we would be better off with education around ~Ableism Awareness~ instead.
Ableism seems to be the last acceptable bigotry.
It is rarely even recognised, and gets pushback even less often.

The tragic deaths of special educational needs children failed by the state
A Times investigation uncovers the stories of 20 young people whose deaths were blamed on failures by schools, councils and hospitals to give them needed support
I don't think people often get what it's like to be a neurodivergent. I don't get why it's easier look away or lock us in mental health wards(2000+ now), or ignore it or dismiss it or restrict care. I don't get how society is so unmoved by this β¬οΈ

Spader in the foreground wearing a tatty leather jacket, with a serious expression. In the background are some punk teens and the tagline: Meet Morgan Hiller. He's always been a rebel. Now, he's about to become a hero. Tuff Turf - where reputations are earned.
Tuff Turf (1985) What was that??? Iβve honestly no idea. It was tonally all over the place & didnβt seem to know what genre it was. It was like a failed mash-up of Rebel Without A Cause, Grease, The Outsiders, West Side Story, and a whole bunch of John Hughes movies

Soldiers with various breeds of dog
On International War Animals Day we remember that animals are forced into warfare and have been treated as equipment in human conflicts for centuries. Calling them βheroesβ may sound respectful, but animals are not soldiers. No more animals in human conflict.β πΈ Warfare History Network, Brooke & IWM
