I ran into the Gargoyle in DQIII completely unprepared and somehow managed to make it out alive, even with equipment weak to fire attacks and using all my prayer rings. Epic gaming.

Man, you don’t realize how badly designed most RPG battle systems are until you fight a boss in a Dragon Quest game. The dance between enemy and party of consisting of buffs, debuffs, and frantic resurrections before wiping out is so frenetic.

I attribute most of my English reading skills to playing RPGs when I was a teenager living in Latin America. I’m trying to do the same now with Japanese and it’s always a downer when an automatic cutscene plays when I’m not expecting it.
Skill issue sure but for people who use games for language learning purposes this is a problem

Being unable to stop dialogue after every line still fucks this up. Most games still have levels of this, but it’s almost never 100% consistent across entire playthroughs.
