We need more kinds of urbanism
laneway urbanism
alley urbanism
courtyard urbanism
small street urbanism
woonerf urbanism
pedestrian street urbanism
Okay so maybe those are basically the same but just let me have this one

Also looking at picking up feminist city that sounds like an interesting perspective. So far I literally just started.
Oh yeah I found it and downloaded a PDF hours ago π
I need to read this! Way more exciting than my thesis! dx.doi.org/10.20381/ruo...
Of course I was living a 10-minute walk from my office and in a 3-unit apartment near downtown so had less to complain about.
Mixed-use building that fits in with βneighbourhood characterβ and allow local business to thrive at a smaller scale.
Evolving our suburbs requires more than just adding housing; it requires integrating the amenities that people need in their daily lives.

Slide from TODERIAN UrbanWORKS Inc @ToderianUW.bsky.social that says βIf you design a city for cars, it fails for everyone, including drivers. You design a multi-model city, it works better for everyone, including drivers.β
The more people that choose to walk, bike and ride public transit to get around cities, the better cities work for everyone, including drivers.
EVERYONE.
Thereβs no βwar on cars,β just an opportunity for more successful cities.
Youβre being lied to. Itβs time we tell #TheTruthAboutTraffic.
Ya the 1-car household is the captive audience in waiting at whatever stage of life but Iβd focus on households with older kids, kids 16-18 that want to have a life, job, etc but canβt have one unless thereβs 2+ vehicles. But what do I know about how the world works, Iβm an urban elite
750 is my complete guess. Suspect itβs more.
OrlΓ©ans has at least two private indoor pools so that kids can get basic swimming lessons. It is not cricket vs pools. It is extremely low taxes vs expanding / maintaining city facilities. #OttPoli
Time for some tolls #autowa!
Does this not seem familiar to you? Iβve been raising this issue since taking office. Halifaxβs current peril is Ottawaβs future threat. Looks like itβs time to continue talking about Urban3.
Hello Ottawa suburbs. π
And council just keeps making the same bad decisions year over year because no one wants to be the one to tell their constituents that they need to start paying their fair share. They've been subsidized for so long the fair share is now fucking huge. Which of course it is, that's what scams are.

On top of that, the city's underlying financial model is not sustainable. In theory the city provides services to residents and recoups the costs for those services through taxes. But in reality large parts of the city cost more money to service than they bring in, in taxes

Yeah, cool, so a short 𧡠about Halifax's finances.
Right now, after 14 or so year of taxes Halifax is at the precipice of a debt crisis which has the genuine potential to be destabilizing to our government. Most likely reforms instead of revolution but destabilizing none the less.
Why now?

Thinking about putting together a detailed station by station breakdown of what was planned, what was promised and what we got once the LRT hits completion and everything thaws/melts.
There's a sidewalk that you could maybe call a path parallel to the highway, but no, there's nothing new there...
Will the O-Train East Extension achieve substantial completion today?
βMicroplastics and nanoplastics in urban air originate mainly from tire abrasion, research reveals.β #UrbanTruth

This type of place can be known by all kinds of names: cafΓ©,Β coffeeΒ house,Β espressoΒ bar, teahouse. Cafes are a great local amenity that can easily fit right into the fabric of a residential street.

Something you notice in the winter is that cyclists and pedestrians have to justify maintenance of their infrastructure in a way that drivers never do
This is just getting ridiculous

βI LOVE TRAFFIC said no one ever.β
βMore people walking, cycling, and using public transit benefits everyone.β
Important #UrbanTruth, this time by @thebikinglawyer.bsky.social!
I think the report makes better argument for banning cars from the road entirely than it does for keeping RTOR.
"Drivers are speeding, aggressive, angry, distracted, and disobey traffic laws. If we try to stop them from running over people in this crosswalk, they'll just run them over in another!"
But here in Ottawa, whereas the original plan for the revitalized ByWard called for full pedestrianization of a key street, the βrefreshedβ plan will only see pedestrianization on key dates like Canada Day. We lack boldness, vision, and even commitment to follow through on the original plan.
Crosswalk on Gladstone in ottawa where snow hasnβt been cleared in weeks so you canβt actually cross even tho thereβs a crosswalk and signal. Ffs. Pedestrians come last here.
βHey kids! Stay in the crosswalk so drivers can be sure to see you!β

Ottawa's latest pedestrian fatality. We don't know the details. We know that this person has a family and community grieving a life cut short. We know that our city council and management have a road safety policy of accepting tragedy as inevitable. This tragedy is an outcome. Not an accident.
Keeping property taxes low is probably one of the least effective ways to make life more affordable for those who are most impacted by the high cost of living. The folks who benefit the most from low property tax increases are those with the most valuable properties.
