Literalmente mi hija
Interesting. I remember in the film Marcelo's mother was referred to as "the Indian" or something like that.
I'd have assumed there to be more of a coast vs the interior thing. Shows my ignorance really.
Oh to be sure, I thought it did a fine job at getting the main themes across. I just felt I didn't understand the significance of some of the details, like the presence of the Angolan refugees or the anti-North sentiments of the southerners. Would be great to revisit after reading up on the period.

It just occurred to me that I've not seen a single Pixar movie since Toy Story 3 and I'd seen almost every one before that.
The Secret Agent (2025) poster
The Secret Agent (2025). Very well made, morbidly entertaining film. However I wish I knew more about Brazil, because I felt like I was missing a lot of context. I wasn't sure at all what to make of the hairy leg subplot, for example. Wagner Moura and Tânia Maria were excellent.
Ā fluffy baby albatross practicing flapping its stubby little wings
The world is a big and scary place, but this fluffy baby albatross is practicing flapping its wings on a sunny Dunedin afternoon.
The world is shit. On the other hand, we've just had a bumper crop of kākāpō, so it balances out.

The cartoon ¡Mucha Lucha!
¡Mucha Lucha! popped into my head for no reason. Aired a lifetime ago on Cartoon Network. Honestly, I don't remember anything from it except the main guy's name, Ricochet, and that it had cool colourful costumes.
Stephen Fry would be overjoyed

If you're doomscrolling, guess what? So far there are 51 kākāpō chicks hatched and thriving this season, the same number of birds as we had in TOTAL in the 90s! Only one chick has died and there are still fertile eggs waiting to hatch!

I think we should take our time translating 🤷🏻♂️ More time than we have been expected to take, more time than we even think it should take.
If translation *alone* took six months, the pay rate would be so huge, it'd eclipse the golden years of the 90s and every manga translator I know wouldn't be juggling 10+ series. But no, it's one of the quickest, cheapest parts, for worse and for worse. You're drawing blood out of a stone, dinguses.
I was reading Numero Zero (in translation) and there's a character called 'Romano Braggadocio', so I wanted to know if it meant the same thing in Italian as it does in English. Not even a word. I reckon it's Eco playing with his audience here.
WHAT A NEWS TO WAKE UP TO
braggadocio(n.) 1590, coined by Spenser as the name of his personification of vainglory ("Faerie Queene," ii.3), from brag, with augmentative ending from Italian words then in vogue in English. In general use by 1594 for "an empty swaggerer;" of the talk of such persons, from 1734.
Huh, "braggadocio" is a faux-Italian word that Spenser made up
It amazes me that there are people out there who genuinely want to get rid of maths notation and think that the subject is better taught with ugly walls of code instead.
Yeah makes you appreciate how sharks have survived all of that. Otoh I didn't know there were extant coelacanth species
