Mind that's not just a time thing; trying to make sense of British TV and pop-culture of the 70s and 80s to anybody who didn't live it would be like showing a dog a card trick, or a dog trying to explain what's so appealing about dog arse to an average human.
Introducing my kids to Garth Marenghi's Darkplace. It's not taking much explanation to make most of the humour land, but sad that some comedy is unsalvageable for modern audiences.
No amount of context will make "Or the Krankies but I think they're quite shrewd" as funny for them as it is for me.
I know it's important to acknowledge historical context and all that, but I'm still sad that there's no way anyone could make Blazing Saddles today.
Because Cleavon Littles and Gene Wilder are dead and whatnot.
I have a very strong memory of I think the very first time I heard this being on a Thoughtbubble dancefloor; me being behind the curve (and it later being one of my then youngests' favourite songs).
Two very cynicism-bypassing moments.
(Also people are really bad at parsing big data sets, and a lot of fash and bigots don't really understand Ofsted. But that's a whole other thing.)
Had a lot of time looking at stuff about faith and private schools this morning so this is timely for me. They aren't a good thing, are they?
I felt everything clench reading that last bit. It's been at least half a decade since I last heard this, and yet.
You're a master with words and that.
It is 2.20am.
Although also maybe our brains just aren't evolved to even have access to objective truths, maybe we're meant to experience the world via fluid, unreliable and abstract recall. Never would have predicted the Mandela Effect, but maybe we just weren't meant to be confronted by how fallible memory is.
(I appreciate as well that that isn't JUST because of the internet, there's a lot going into infantilising people, mainly because capitalism. But really tho, technically we need never have an argument about who is in what film again.)
(For all that I understand that the tech itself, & politics, are actively debilitating and de-intellectualising (think that's a made up word), it still does amaze me that even with all it's flaws, there's still SO MUCH real information on it, and people have less idea how basic shit works than ever)
I only really know Threads as the advert, the place that looks like you're clicking on an interesting post but turns out it's an advert for Threads.
Is there actually a site with people on it using it, I've never investigated.
(There are already at least 2 Twitters too many.)

Oof. I just read your post in the most uncharitable, pedantic way possible, and I gotta tell ya: it's not looking good for you.
That was a hell of a time. There are a lot of great and out there artists - many I like more than Mahfood personally - who are IN the culture by dint of being introduced to audiences during the 80s when Marvel & DC editors seemed to like art, but someone lofi like Mahfood being in Wizard?
I don't obviously know the specifics but is this like how certain things that happened in real life at a broadcasted event is all over my FB and Twitter but doesn't appear to have happened at all on my BS?
White British trans celebs are reportedly weighing options on which other marginalised group to inadvertently cause harm to, so things can have always been brilliant for them here as well.
John Davidson is retiring from his career raising awareness of Tourettes today amid widespread reports that the British have been accepting and understanding of people with the condition for ages.
"I wish someone had told me" he said, "I thought things were still quite bad."

Dr. Karen Hoyland who designed the self-assessment form explained: “Many adults discovering they’re autistic experience relief, catharsis and even self-acceptance. The self-assessment questions put a stop to all that.”
(I really, really want there to be a massive, disruptive investigation into the Gorton and Denton By-Election voter fraud thing, because it will be HILARIOUS if one of the right-wing parties have votes cancelled over it.)
@greenparty.org.uk Can I recommend you investigate/snag evidence on Facebook fuckery? I searched for 'gorton' and 'gorton by election results' and it was mostly 2-3 day old propaganda, no mentioning of the result after scrolling 20 articles.
6 hours after the BBC announced the result, 20 pages of scrolling (with and without FBP) and nothing.
A brilliant result!
But: over on FB I just tried to find out more so used FB search ('gorton', 'gorton by election') and I recommend anyone still on that shit-show try it.
I got this.
