Table with the preference order for different alternatives to Daylight Savings Time.
Like most right-thinking Americans I loathe the time change. Especially "spring forward." But I suspect we're stuck with it thanks to Arrow's Impossibility Theorem. Here's my guess as to the constituencies. #econsky what do you think?

Useless Lament: Eichler's Music of Remembrance
"The airβs vibrations still and disappear..."
Time's Echo by @jeremy-eichler.bsky.social is a truly remarkable book about music and memory, narrating works by Schoenberg, Strauss, Britten, and Shostakovitch, and meditating on their attempts to grapple with WWII and the Holocaust. I wrote about it here: substack.com/home/post/p-...

From the Archives: Goodwill Toward Men
"Thrift implies an economic enterprise, charity implies a human one..."
βWhat is it then, the human instinct to salvage? To frame out a new roof? To stitch a button back? To help a stranger? To imagine life might extend beyond your field of vision?β Great piece by Kate Harrison Belz on joys and consolations of thrifting. (No paywall) open.substack.com/pub/theenthu...

So true! Just reading it as well and surprised at how funny the Cetology chapter is. First go around I thought it was a slog.

This is reminding me that one (possibly apocryphal) story for the origin of Bayeβs law is the Rev. Bayes wanted to prove Jesus rose from the dead.

Judith Shklarβs Ordinary Vices
reordering of hatreds
is There moral significance to which vice you hate most? Judith Shklar put cruelty first. So did Zadie Smith in her novel The Fraud. My latest in The Enthusiast: open.substack.com/pub/theenthu...

The snow leopard is a legendary elusive cat... so much so that they've become known as the "ghost cat." Now in Mongolia, camera trap data and footage are helping to protect the species.

If you use GMail, AI (Gemini) was turned on yesterday by default and now scans all of your content for machine learning. To turn off, go to Settings>General and scroll down. Uncheck the box for "Smart features."
There's other "Smart" add-ons as well, but that's the one that reads your content.
