Yes the reaction was massively overblown. I kinda love open endings sometimes (go figure I love FF7), so I was actually pretty satisfied with the original cut. It let me kinda fill in my own blanks. Extended Cut filled in some of them for me, but I do agree it's probably a better ending objectively
