Juan Sebastián Verón turns 51 today
His career began at hometown club of Estudiantes de La Plata (where he is currently president), before moves to Boca Juniors, Sampdoria, Parma, Lazio, Man Utd, Chelsea, Inter and then back to Estudiantes, where he won the 2009 Libertadores!
🇦🇷🤝🇩🇪 For balance, Coudet is no Walter Frosch. The legendary Kaiserslautern and St Pauli player smoked like a chimney, storing cigarettes in his socks when he was in a rush 🚬

¡Maestro!
7th March 1999: Racing Club de Avellaneda’s game against Talleres at El Cilindro was postponed as the club faced severe financial issues which threatened the club’s existence. 30,000 fans turned up anyway, along with much of the Racing squad, in an ultimate declaration of love
Cricket er da stort i land rundt Puerto Rico, kanskje ikke mye på selve Puerto Rico (mer opptatt av baseball selvfølgelig) men The West Indies og de tidligere britiske øyene derimot 🏏
🇦🇷 🚬 Flashback time, as there’s no Argieball this weekend (due to clubs striking). New River Plate manager Eduardo Coudet, while playing for Rosario Central, once picked up and smoked a cigarette thrown at him from the stand at Colón!
Side note: those Quilmes ad hoardings 😍
🇦🇷💋 OTD 2020: Diego Armando Maradona’s last appearance at La Bombonera.
Carlitos Tévez scored the title-winning goal (pipping River on the last day) and, when subbed off, headed straight for Diego in what is now a hugely iconic embrace 🥰🥹
🇦🇷 🥩 The international ‘asado’ championships have begun in Zapala, Argentina 🤤

Juan Gilberto 'The Buffalo' Funes was born on this day in 1963. El Búfalo scored in both legs of the 1986 Libertadores final, winning River their first continental trophy, but within six years had passed. Aged 29 Funes died on the operating table during a fifth heart surgery 😢

Búfalo Funes was due to join Boca Juniors, despite his legendary status at River Plate. But…

OTD 1982: River Plate 1-5 Boca Juniors
Boca's greatest victory away at their fiercest rivals, River Plate fielded a reserve side with the first team players were striking due to a dispute with the club's board.

Remember Facundo Sava? Well, the Argentine, who played for Fulham between 2002 and 2004, turns 52 today.
Sava is currently manager for Argentinian Primera División side Sarmiento, his second spell at the club (his first lasting just four matches!)
If you're wondering why there is no fútbol in Argentina this weekend, see below...
It is based on the fileteado style of decoration (not too dissimilar from Norwegian rosemaling). Good point on the dark shirts, hopefully they won't use them. The black second shirt from a few years back was nice, but again not ideal considering summer World Cups
Thoughts on Argentina’s second shirt for the 2026 World Cup?
Leandro Paredes’ pass for Miguel Merentiel’s second goal, Boca’s third, was something to behold, all the more from this angle! 😎

Porte was part of the Uruguay team that won the 1917 Copa América on home soil. RIP

🇦🇷 Boca Juniors won 3-0 away at Lanús with 12,000 bosteros in the away end 😍 (in Round 8 of Torneo Apertura)
Whilst it seems unlikely away fans will return to all games (particularly in the city of Buenos Aires), the trialling of away fans’ return after 13 years continue 💪
