This genre isn’t quite the same as a typical field guide. In Massachusetts I had A Beginner's Guide to Recognizing Trees of the Northeast (Mikolas).
The Pacific Northwest has Trees to Know in Oregon and Washington (Jensen). Eminently practical for the transplant or new naturalist.

I love a β€œhere are some good trees to recognize in your region” book.
It’s like when you start a new job and you can check the staff page on the website to help you remember people’s names. But for trees.

1) USPS did not lose $3.3b. It provided a service that cost $3.3b. *The Pentagon* loses you money, however, every time it accidentally yeets a fighter jet off the deck of a carrier

This sounds like you’re talking about a capacity (for tolerance) dwindling, but I prefer to think of it as a capacity (for care) expanding. As I give attention & care to my own needs, I become more attuned to my body/mind and better at noticing my needs & preferences

My backyard resident mockingbird has been out here doing their whole repertoire for about 20 minutes now, including a white-winged dove routine that fooled the Merlin app

White House pauses all federal grants, sparking confusion The Trump administration has put a hold on all federal financial grants and loans, affecting tens of billions of dollars in payments.

I think some people hear β€œgrants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service.

β€œPausing” grants means people don’t eat.

Central Valley farmworkers scared to show up to work over deportation fear The California Farm Bureau says fears in the Central Valley have led to migrant farmworkers not showing up for work, which has virtually halted the area’s citrus harvest.

The California Farm Bureau Federation has reported a decline in the citrus harvest in the Central Valley. The bureau estimates that 55,000 migrant workers are essential for the valley’s operations, and their absence could lead to unharvested crops.

Someone recently asked me what's the point of having two or three buttons on a tailored jacket if the bottom-most button isn't meant to be fastened? It's easier to understand style if you think of it in terms of social language, not purely as function. Let me give you some examples. 🧡

On this Elementary rewatch, I’ve noticed Sherlock has multiple playing-card brand t-shirts. He wears the Aviator logo in 1x17 β€œPossibility Two,” and a Bee design (πŸ˜‰) earlier in Season 1

But even if I just complete 1 or 2 first actions and nothing else, I’ve still done at least one thing to make my goals easier the next time. 5/5

When I stall out, forget what I’m doing, or realize I’ve strayed too far afield of the list, I just pick another First Action to take. I often surprise myself w both how many first actions I can get done, and how many of my original goals I see thru to the finish after doing just the first step. 4/5

01.01.2025 04:17 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

This lets my brain follow its natural tangents in a way that is still helping me make progress. The First Actions are each small and feel manageable. I avoid picking up my phone, and I carry the First Actions sticky note with me if I leave the room. 3/5

01.01.2025 04:17 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

Step 3: While working through the First Actions list, I let myself β€œget distracted” and do additional things. Often those are the next couple steps that follow the first action I just did, but sometimes they’re less related things I think of or see while I’m working on the first actions. 2/5

01.01.2025 04:17 πŸ‘ 2 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

Step 1: I write down all the stuff I’m thinking about doingβ€”wants and needs. This is NOT my to-do list.

Step 2: on a sticky note, I write down *only* the single 1st step to start each of the items from step 1. I title it β€œFirst actions.” THIS is the list I work from. 1/5

Strand Bookstore workers are going on strike starting tomorrow. And take it from someone who had a stint at the Strand…these workers deserve what they’re asking for and more

This is true for me also, and I feel such a weird disconnect when I encounter people (in my larger circles) who don’t seem to have gotten the memo!

Feels like every year we get new studies that say "trickle-down economics are bullshit" and "UBI is a good idea" and "just give homeless people money" and duh, we all know these things but hey, none of them help rich people get richer, so we keep on Groundhog Daying the stupid bad cruel shit, whee.

Former Amazon worker here; do not cross this picket line. Don't do it. Don't even order from them (unless absolutely necessary). They're a disgusting company to work for and the reason for my knee problems that required years of physical therapy.

Fuck Amazon. We stand with the workers! πŸ‘ŠπŸ»βœ¨

I truly hope someone out there has analyzed the futuristic features of Snow Crash in comparison to the real life 2010s–2020s because I would get such a kick out of that

Re-reading Snow Crash in 2024 is wiiild. I’m so glad I read it early enough the first time that it still felt futuristic, because it certainly does not anymore. Now it feels like an anachronistic present-tense and it’s *delicious*
