I use a combination of both
I normally name the main layers, like the lineart, base colors, lighting, shadows, etc.
But usually for extra effects and clipped layers I don't bother as I keep creating more as I need them, not really having a consistent use for them
It's a good way to order the chaos

I remember when I was in uni, the teacher would task us with making the basic skeleton of a table in HTML, and while my classmates were still finishing the skeleton, I was already putting CSS into everything, even though it wasn't required XD

I finished my character of the Sherro species from Aniimo, Cerith, a noble protector of his people. He can transform his shells into different types of shells and conches to simulate different weapons, and the pearls around his neck can be used as an extra, less lethal melee weapon.
