SPSP is crazy. So many presentations on climate change and environment, yet folks arenβt allowed to take the leftover lunches without tickets because all leftover lunches βmustβ be thrown away π€
Anyways is you see me, say hi!

My lab at UW Madison is hiring a new lab manager! Iβm looking for a motivated and detail-oriented person to help run the labβs day-to-day, including our ongoing neuroimaging and behavioral studies. This is especially well suited for graduating undergrads thinking about grad school. Link below
If we keep saying this generation is being destroyed, how will adolescents ever believe in their own potential? My TEDx talk is live on @ted.com. Changes in their brains, bodies, and social worlds create opportunities for young people to grow & thrive - with our support. www.ted.com/talks/jennif...

Update: My contract won't be cancelled due to an internal fund. This is a personal relief after weeks of uncertainty!
Still thinking about: how answering deep questions in basic science often takes years, and how much we are losing now in talent, infrastructure, and intellectual freedom
New report shows that NIH grants fueled $95 billion in economic activity and 407,782 jobs in 2024.
That's not to mention the countless lives that biomedical research has saved.
Show me a better investment than that.

Apropos of nothing, now is a good time to brush up on your rights as a protester or protest organizer. You are largely protected under the first amendment, thiugh there are limitations. www.aclu.org/know-your-ri...
I wrote about why the most important Oscar nominee is the movie about how living under authoritarian rule can feel surprisingly normal.
Thank you so much, Iris! It was great to meet you on interview day and Iβll definitely be reaching out soon for all your tips and insights π€

Troubling:
Congresspeople say they are NOT hearing from academics, or university administrators.
PLEASE SPEAK UP!
Oppose these budget cuts to research, health, student loans!

Tell others to do the same!
Great work as always, Monica!
DOGE plans to slash about as much ($4B) from NIH, and hence from universities and medical centers, as the government gave SpaceX ($3.8B) last year.
It's not about the money and government "waste."
It's never been about the money or government "waste."

If you are on a study section that will not be reviewing diversity fellowships but will be reviewing "regular" fellowships, your next move is clear. Do not participate in the review unless all submissions can be reviewed together. Reclassify diversity grants as "regular" grants & review them all
Still time to apply pressure before RFK nomination- come armed with data that speaks to Senators' concerns (your vote, state-level economy, etc)
A lot of folks have followed me after I posted about NIH funding. Glad you're interested in the topic!
You can help by contacting congress to voice your support for federally funded research and encourage them to increase, rather than cut NIH/NSF, funding in the 2025 fiscal year.
