When I got long covid four years ago, the waiting room at the local long covid clinic was mostly women, mostly older.

About two years ago I noticed that most of the other patients are now kids. It's staggering to see how many kids are winding up with #LongCovid. #WearAMask #CovidIsntOver

Yes. We've had many new members join our group. Many of them joined the party because they want better public health policy on covid and long covid. Which is green party policy.

This was true of the UK too. It's doing the same thing as last year. Climbing slowly throughout the year and dropping back down round about Christmas time. We remain hopeful.

Tulane study reveals key differences in long-term brain effects of COVID-19 and flu
Disruption of serotonin and dopamine signaling pathways could explain why some feel 'brain fog' after being infected by COVID-19

Even a mild case of COVID-19 or the flu can impact the body long after the fever and cough fade, according to new Tulane University research that may help explain why some people struggle to feel fully recovered weeks or months later.

Tulane researchers found that while both viruses can leave lasting lung damage, only SARS-CoV-2 infection caused persistent brain inflammation and small blood vessel injury, even after the virus was no longer detectable. The findings, published in Frontiers in Immunology, help explain why long COVID often includes neurological symptoms such as brain fog, fatigue and mood changes, while influenza is more commonly associated with respiratory complications.

Subheading notes researchers now recognize eight forms of long COVID, with slow treatment progress. Main image shows Samantha Crausman, 28, lying in bed wearing an eye mask, covered with a blanket in a dim bedroom with pillows and items nearby. Reflected in the window, her father, Dr. Robert S. Crausman, stands outside on a porch wearing a mask and winter clothing, looking in. The scene highlights strict precautions to avoid reinfection, including limited contact and visitors staying outside.

Samantha Crausman, 28, has had ongoing symptoms since a COVID infection 4 years ago. She and her parents were fully vaccinated when they got COVID in 2022, but only she didn’t recover. At risk of worsening with reinfection, her family still lives with strict pandemic-level protections.

We're gratified that WHO is making this point. A lot of damage has been done by poor information, including from WHO itself.

Abstract
Background: In the context of long COVID, persistent fatigue is among the most prevalent symptoms that can develop after SARS-CoV-2 infection. Mitochondrial myopathy and endothelial dysfunction, which are triggers of inflammation, have emerged as prominent causes of long COVID-induced fatigue. Interestingly, the intake of flavanols, particularly (βˆ’)-epicatechin (EC), has been associated with the positive modulation of endothelial and mitochondrial structure and function. Methods: In this work, we conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial to determine whether an EC-enriched supplement (ECES) improves plasma markers of inflammation, endothelial structure, and fatigue-related endpoints in patients with long COVID-19. Results: The study included 46 subjects (mean age 52 years) who were instructed to consume two capsules/day for 90 days of either ECES (n = 23) or placebo (n = 23). Endpoints assessed included mean changes in plasma inflammatory markers (IL-1Ξ², IL-6, and TNF-Ξ±) and endothelial dysfunction markers (syndecan-1), handgrip strength, fatigue scale, and quality of life (QoL). The results showed significant improvements in the ECES group for inflammatory markers, syndecan-1, and fatigue compared with the placebo group. Conclusions: The results yield intriguing positive findings for EC and open a new avenue for treating long COVID.

5. "My doctor doesn't wear a mask."
Short Answer: Healthcare professionals are human too, and institutions vary in their policies. That doesn't change the science behind airborne transmission or the benefit of masking.
Detailed Explanation:
β€’ Ideally, doctors and healthcare workers should be at the forefront of applying new knowledge about how respiratory diseases spread-just like when handwashing became standard practice in medicine, despite resistance at first.
β€’ Historically, medical communities have sometimes resisted change: for example, when Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis introduced the concept of hand hygiene, he faced enormous pushback.
Some doctors believed "a gentleman's hands are always clean."

Some doctors believed "a gentleman's hands are always clean."

β€’ We now know they were wrong, but that resistance was psychological-no one wanted to admit they might have been harming patients unknowingly. Today, some medical professionals may similarly struggle with the idea that they could have minimized airborne transmission by masking in the past.
β€’ Most healthcare workers adhere to existing infection control policies that have not been updated to new evidence. This delay is not simply a personal shortcoming; it often reflects inadequate institutional leadership, the significant challenges and costs associated with updating policies and investing in clean air infrastructure, and a reluctance among healthcare institutions to tully assume responsibility for protecting both staff and patients.
β€’ Doctors are not infallible or free from cognitive biases; they're human. Their individual choices, or hospital policy, do not negate the protective effect of masks and good ventilation.
