California is a “donor” state. Each year, we pay more — lots more — to the federal government in taxes than the state receives in return.

We’re proud to sponsor #SB1240 that would establish the Office of Nonprofit Empowerment within the Governor’s Office — creating a one-stop shop to help nonprofits access essential resources and better navigate state government processes. ✨

We should never ever use AI to preemptively fire or launch weapons or to mass surveil citizens without human intervention. www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2...
Kudos to @anthropic.com for resisting the extremely dangerous and reckless demands from the Trump Pentagon to use its artificial intelligence for autonomous weapons and mass surveillance without human oversight.
Excellent conversation! Really enjoyed talking at Livermore's Bankhead Theater about what we can do to boost California nonprofits with Geoff Green, CEO of CalNonprofits, & Chet Hewitt, chair of the CalNonprofits Board of Directors.
Huge thanks again to Tri-Valley NonProfit Alliance for hosting.
Great to meet up with a longtime friend and true political legend, Congressman James Clyburn, of South Carolina, during his visit to the state Capitol.
Under SB 1275, Californians who buy a car or truck would get a federal tax break that they don’t currently receive. The legislation, as a result, could boost vehicle sales in the state, and it won’t cost consumers, the state, or car dealers a thing. It’s a win-win proposal.
California has long been a ‘donor’ state – that is, Californians send more money each year to the federal government than the state receives in return. SB 1275 is a creative approach to address that problem, and it will save California taxpayers money.
SB 1275 would eliminate the state sales tax on motor vehicles and replace it with a vehicle license fee of the same amount that can be deducted from federal taxes.
Excited today to introduce SB 1275, innovative legislation that would reduce the amount of taxes Californians pay to the federal government each year by up to an estimated $250 million.

SB 1240 will provide a much-needed tool to ensure that nonprofit organizations thrive in California.

CA nonprofits play a vital role in our economy, providing essential services & programs in education, health care, social services, the arts, the environment, public safety & more. But with significant cuts by the federal government, nonprofits are fighting for their survival.
SB 1240 would establish the Office of Nonprofit Empowerment within the governor’s office – a one-stop shop to improve nonprofits’ access to essential resources and help organizations navigate the often-complicated processes of state government.
NEW: Proud today to introduce SB 1240, new legislation that would help boost California nonprofit organizations in the wake of significant federal budget cuts. @calnonprofits.bsky.social
I’m also thankful for the administration’s decision to award $5 million to the county of Alameda for its successful Violence Reduction and Recovery Initiative to reduce gun violence and assist those victimized by gun violence. www.bscc.ca.gov/wp-content/u...
In the wake of last November’s tragic mass shooting in the Stockton area, I’m heartened that the administration heard our calls for more funding for effective violence prevention and crime survivors’ programs. www.gov.ca.gov/2026/02/19/g...
Huge thanks to @cagovernornewsom.bsky.social for awarding $4 million in California Violence Intervention and Prevention (CalVIP) funds to essential violence prevention and victims’ services programs in San Joaquin County, including $2 million to the city of Stockton.
Data center owners and their customers should bear the high costs associated with data centers, not California ratepayers. SB 1168 will ensure large energy users pay their fair share.
Californians pay the second-highest utility prices in the country, and rates are expected to soar even higher because of the rapid growth of data centers around the state.
sd05.senate.ca.gov/news/mcnerne...
SB 1168 would impose a surcharge on data centers that use excessive amounts of energy. The funds generated by the energy surcharge would offset rate hikes on California residents and reduce rates for low-income families.
NEW: Proud today to introduce new legislation that would protect Californians from skyrocketing utility rates caused by data centers.
SB 872 will protect CA’s main water system by directing $300 million annually in greenhouse gas reduction fund (GGRF) dollars to essential levee repairs in the Delta and shoring up SWP’s canals to prevent interruptions in essential water deliveries. sd05.senate.ca.gov/news/mcnerne...
Supported by environmentalists and State Water Contractors that have often been at odds over water use, SB 872 would safeguard both the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta and the State Water Project (SWP).
NEW: Excited today to announce the introduction of SB 872, groundbreaking legislation that would help protect California’s primary water source for decades to come.
SB 1120 is sponsored by the Silicon Valley Leadership Group. sd05.senate.ca.gov/news/mcnerne...
SB 1120 would strengthen and expand the California Competes Tax Credit program, which incentivizes businesses to locate in CA and to stay and grow here. The bill would allow the CalCompetes tax credits to be refundable for awardees in strategic industries.
NEW: Proud today to introduce SB 1120, new legislation that would boost California’s innovation economy and create jobs in cutting-edge industries such as fusion energy and quantum technology.
Artificial intelligence has tremendous potential, but Al also presents substantial risks.
To ensure that AI is developed and deployed responsibly, I believe we need a combination of short-term regulations to make sure AI is safe, coupled with long-term standards. www.youtube.com/shorts/ylBAj...
