During the cost-of-living crisis, single parents were much more likely to need to borrow money than others.
In 2023-24, two-thirds of single parents with three or more children who were in receipt of means-tested benefits (like Universal Credit) borrowed money to help pay for things.
The £22 million bailout given to the University of Dundee leaves a "completely irrelevant" amount of emergency funding in the pot from which the rest of Scotland's universities can draw, a former university principal has said. The Scottish Funding Council announced on 20 March that it had approved a £22m support package for Dundee, comprising a mix of low-cost loans and capital grant funding. The money has been drawn from a £25m pot provided by the Scottish government, meaning just £3m, or 12 per cent, remains to be allocated. There are 19 universities in Scotland.
