Protect Healthcare. Stop the Shutdown.

Donald Trump and congressional Republicans have shut down the government for weeks now because they refuse to come to the table and negotiate to protect Americans’ healthcare coverage. They need to stop the shutdown and protect our healthcare.

Because of the Republican shutdown, Utah families will stop receiving SNAP benefits on November 1st. This will literally take food off the tables of almost 90,000 Utah families, all because Trump and congressional Republicans won’t come to the table to negotiate.

We all know many Democrats who register as Republicans to try to mitigate the harshness and extremity of the majority party. I understand the temptation. But I grow more convinced that if that was ever effective, it no longer is. Even relatively moderate and principled Republicans, with few exceptions, end up enabling and facilitating Trump and his allies’ authoritarian efforts. Having some input at Republican caucuses, conventions, and primaries simply is not stemming the tide. Republicans point to registration numbers as justification to ignore Utahns who disagree with them. It’s time to take that excuse away. If we want to stand up for Utah values, protect our democracy, and deliver common-sense solutions, we need Democrats to be loud, proud, and united in our own ranks. Only one of our two major parties is committed to standing up for common sense interests for all Utahns instead of concentrated power and wealth for the few.
