My kids were in for a real treat last night and surprisingly voted the film an average of 8.5 out of 10. Of course I rate it higher. Now to read ‘Fifty Men in the Valley of the Shadow’, the making of The Wild Geese

110 years ago, Émile Driant and thousands of others were killed in the opening days of Verdun.
To mark the anniversary, I’ve reworked my short film on the battle, told in 5 minutes.
If you cant name the 4 men pictured...then you need to watch!

Some superb First World War aerial photos and trench maps. It’s like being a kid in a sweet shop 😁
1/2: Back from a magical 6 days with some of the SGWT team exploring Verdun & the Meuse-Argonne. Trenches were walked, bunkers explored, stories uncovered, steak enjoyed & perhaps the odd beer along the way.

FACT OF THE DAY. 16 January 1957. The original Cavern Club opened at 10 Mathew Street in Liverpool as a jazz club. The club later became a centre for the Merseybeat boom of the early 1960s. The Beatles played regularly at the venue until 1963. The original club was demolished in 1973.

The First World War is never too far away, or that of the Crimean War. A Verdun sign in Mauritius 🇲🇺 … which is not too far away from a Balaclava
After 15 hrs of travel, it’s now beer o clock 🍻
I just finished recording with @battleguide.bsky.social on the fascinating evolution of historical military maps.
We talked about: "How digitizing trench maps can bring history to life and enhance our understanding of the battlefields."
Thanks Dudley Giles, for a great discussion
A black and white photo shows show British soldiers, wearing battledress and steel helmets, standing with their heads bowed. They are standing between rows of white headstones, with a Cross of Sacrifice and trees in the background.
Today in 1939, during the 'Phoney War' period of the Second World War, two British soldiers pay their respects to a casualty of the First World War, at an Imperial War Graves Commission cemetery in France. #WW2 #WW1 #History

A beautiful painting of Noor Inayat Khan; also known as Nora Baker or ‘Madeleine’ her SOE codename. Sent to occupied France as a wireless operator Khan was betrayed, captured, and executed at Dachau in 1944. She was posthumously awarded the George Cross for gallantry #WAAF #SOE

I missed the Ford Capri but the Hetzer did stand out
